Questions at UMKC as former Softball student-athletes & parents say current AC Bachkora entered the team's locker room multiple times while student-athletes were in various stages of getting dressed/undressed. Comments: "Some girls would have to cover themselves or duck behind the couch, scrambling to cover themselves. [...] I actually left because it was such a bad situation. I just thought it was weird. I’m just happy to be out of the school. It made me uncomfortable." The location of a microwave looks to have been part of the story so the Roos bought a new unit & located it outside the locker room. University Title IX officer Thompson talked to Bachkora about the incidents, which also included kissing student-athletes on the forehead or cheek & making inappropriate jokes, and "found Bachkora’s explanations to be credible and that she did not recommend disciplinary action." From a current student-athlete on the team, "I believe in my mind that kind of behavior from any coach is wrong. I don’t believe they deserve to be coaching young women." More. (link)
Iowa AD Barta says he was first approached about joining the College Football Playoff committee at the NCAA Convention in Orlando just a few weeks ago. Barta quips, "It’ll be a lot of work. I now have the opportunity to tell my wife that I have to watch more football." More: "I understand the commitment. That goes back to Kirk’s leadership and longevity and experience (in football). Barbara Burke, as deputy A.D., works directly with football. We have a great senior staff. I understand that if we had that opportunity, not only will I not be at that game, I’d love the opportunity to recuse myself in a meeting if it came to that." (link)
$17.2M is the total Hawaii is asking of the state & university to commit for support to athletics, $1.5M of which is "fringe benefit costs for 30 current athletic department staffers, including administrators and coaches." Last fiscal year UH got $15.68M in direct external support. FY18's deficit sat at $1.9M, tied for the second-lowest since 2012. Interim Prez Lassner still wants athletics to be at a breakeven point by 2020 & notes the need for a gradual pay back of $14.7M in debt to the institution. State senator Wakai says it's "up to David (Matlin, the athletic director) and (lobbyist) Joel Matsunaga to come back and validate why they should be getting the same amount." (link)
Duke AD White sat down with AthleticDirectorU to review his track record of producing senior leaders who become ADs. White points to political acumen & leadership chops as two vital skills for administrative advancement. Notably: "Where you can't delegate, you need to lead because leadership can't be delegated. […] If you ask for my opinion, I will render it to you and it won't be a negotiable opinion and I won't modify it to make you feel better. […] The best thing about this being my fourth decade in college athletics is that I've arrived at a place where I can tell you what I think whether you like it or not. […] I feel like I've had an unbelievable set of opportunities of which I'm very appreciative....great institutions, wonderful Student-Athletes, amazing coaches, and administrative teams to die for." (link)
At a conference in Düsseldorf, Germany, former MP & Silva CEO Lösch said DAZN had budgeted $2.5B for sports rights spending/acquisitions this year. Even as the OTT platform continues to grow, $2.5B is only a fraction of the $8B+ ESPN doles out & $1.75B by Fox on the NFL alone. However, per John Wall Street, "it compares favorably to what Amazon and Facebook are projected to spend – neither has ever paid more than 8-figures on a sports rights agreement." (link)

Eight conference games in 18 days has Rider MBB HC Baggett fired up at the MAAC's scheduling strategy, "Eight games in 18 days. No other team in the league will have done that. Eight games in 18 days, how much legs do you think you’re going to have? Don’t ask me. Ask Rich Ensor and them. That’s all I’ll say on it. Eight games in 18 days. We’re going to get on the bus again (Monday) and play the next day. We’re going to play Friday-Sunday. Eight games in 18 days and we’re supposed to be one of the preseason favorites." Further, Baggett says there's no time to actually practice with his team during the stretch, just walk through after walk through. (link)
Georgia AD McGarity thinks comments by Bulldogs MBB HC Crean after Saturday's loss to Ole Miss were misinterpreted, "From the very onset, if you look at the press conference in its entirety, he led off by taking full responsibility for everything. I think Tom cares deeply about these players and the perception that he was not caring or trying to shift blame to them was certainly not taken that way...If you look at the whole press conference in its entirety, instead of maybe pulling a couple of graphs out and singling out those, it didn’t portray the whole story. […] I understand his frustration, but in no way was it meant for that to be portrayed as anything but supporting our players and doing everything he could do. He accepted responsibility and I think he made that very clear from the start." I suppose "pulling a couple of graphs out and singling those out" is exactly what we did yesterday morning, so apologies if we missed the entire context. (link - McGarity's comments, link - transcript of Crean's full presser from Saturday)
South Carolina AD Tanner thinks Gamecocks WBB HC Staley would make an excellent AD if she chose to pursue such a path, "Absolutely. She has great insight. The fact that she is so versatile when it comes to intercollegiate athletics." As for Staley? "Never. No. No, no, no. I’m not a suit. I would never be a suit. [...] Being an administrator, you’re around the game but you’re not close enough. I need to be close enough to impact it a little bit." (link)
Fascinating backstory on Longwood MBB HC Aldrich, who left a coaching job at his alma mater, Hamden-Sydney (DIII), early in his career for corporate success in law, oil and gas, and private equity. Aldrich remained close to his basketball roots, choosing to live in inner city Houston and keep a presence in the AAU scene, but waited 20 years to take the plunge back into full-time coaching. At that point, he had an awakening, "For the first time for me in my Christian faith, I realized, 'Well, if this thing is really true and I’m really just going to heaven and I’m really just here for a short period of time, then it really doesn’t matter that I climb the ladder, that I amass more money.' Do what you feel called to do and what you want to do." Really interesting story. (link)
Lots more from Washington State AD Chun as he looks back on his first year in Pullman. One highlight: "After being here for a year and seeing the fever firsthand, watching what happened on GameDay, seeing how we travel on the road and meeting with people one on one, I’d argue there’s almost no place like this in the country. Simply because the loyalty and love Cougs have for Washington State is really touching." Chun lauds the job former AD & current Nebraska AD Moos did in setting up a good situation, points to fundraising & corporate sponsorships as revenue areas that can make the "greatest dent." On the possibility of an equity partner for the Pac-12, "Being a part of the Pac-12 has to mean that you’re OK with being a little bit innovative – and a disrupter. It’s healthy for us to look at this and decide if it’s an opportunity to create more revenue and get more distribution." Next facility focus: Bohler Gym. As noted, more. (link)
"The contemplated move of the Athletics administrative offices has been part of a larger effort to improve efficiency by consolidating our department and nothing to do with moving to a 'nicer' building." That's New Mexico AD Nunez on plans for the Lobos to get virtually all staffers under one roof, as highly suggested by consultant & former Missouri AD Alden for operational effectiveness purposes. Alden also pointed to the proximity of athletics offices being in the same building as Albuquerque Institute of Mathematics and Science charter high school, "This is (of) primary importance. That will certainly not be seen as appropriate to have a high school located in the same building as an intercollegiate athletics program." Looks like Alden was paid $53K for his work in Albuquerque. More. (link)
Arizona MBB still leads the Pac-12 in attendance, with 13,697 on average at the McKale Center, despite an unprecedented four home losses this season. Those four losses represent 22.2% of UA's 18 home losses during HC Miller's 10-year tenure. AD Heeke: "Look, we’re gonna lead this conference for the 35th year in average attendance. This is an unbelievable fan base that has been very supportive of the program and where we’re headed. ... We hear nothing from our group, our fanbase, other than, ‘Let’s move forward, let’s get back to winning basketball games. and that’s what we’re gonna do." (link)
Also Noticed: Updated MBB comparative rankings. Refreshed every afternoon. (link); Stanford Sports Performance Director Turley has been placed on administrative leave, no explanation given publicly. (link); Former Ohio State FB HC-turned-administrator Meyer has relaxed in his new role. According to his wife, Shelley, "The level of intensity for him is now a minus 12 as opposed to a plus 110." (link); Wright State and its faculty union reached an agreement late last night to end a three-week strike. WSU Prez: "Both parties made substantial concessions to help move the university forward together." (link); Louisiana Monroe FB student-athlete Starks and his girlfriend Kirt were both arrested and charged with domestic abuse following a Sunday morning altercation with eachother. (link)
