IEB NEWSLETTER 2/14/19

Top Actions:

Your faithful editrixes at IEB Newsletter Central are staying safe and dry as the atmospheric river rises (and hope you are too!) But hey, climate change was last week's news and we've moved on to new shutdowns of all kinds, justified and not.

We're also mulling over the Parkland tragedy anniversary, and celebrating small gains since last year. Yesterday, two gun control bills made it through the House Judiciary Committee, thanks to Reps like Lucy McBath. But let's not forget what happens every day close to home.

We can all do this together.

  1. No beds, no boots, no wall
  2. No nukes, no how
  3. No day but today

Action #1: Tell our MoCs: Stay strong

Deadline: right now - The current proposed $1.375 billion budget deal may not please Bully-in-Chief, but it isn't good enough for us either: it doesn't limit immigrant detention, and it doesn't prevent him from using DHS $ as a slush fund for the wall, ICE and other anti-immigrant projects. Don't be fooled: we don't have to choose between taking this deal and accepting another government shutdown (aka holding the government hostage). Read our article for more important info and to find out how to tell our MoCs to say NO to a bad deal.

Action #2: A few good ways to avoid nuclear war

Deadline: before the world blows up - Worried by the image of certain small fingers on big red buttons? Action is better than biting your nails. There's the Hold the LYNE Act, which would prohibit research, development, production, and deployment of low-yield nuclear warheads for submarine-launched ballistic missiles. We need to get Reps. DeSaulnier and Swalwell, and Senator Harris to sign on. Then there are two bills, S. 200 and H.R.921/S.272, that would prohibit the first use of nuclear weapons unless Congress has declared war. Again, Sen. Harris needs to to step up (and the bicameral bill is brand new - we want all our House members to sign on as well). You'll find info, detailed call scripts and contact info in our article.

Action #3: We Love You, You Love Us (We Hope)

Deadline: today but why not every day - OK, sorry if that headline triggered an earworm. But seriously, we couldn't resist — the newsletter is coming out on Valentine's Day! Take a moment to think about some people or organizations that warm your heart and keep your resistance flame burning — and tell them you love them! A thank you note, a contribution, some of your time — you decide. And yes, aw shucks, it could even be us. We've got nice red Donate buttons, and you can drop us a love note at info@indivisibleeb.org if you'd like to, you know, get involved. We ❤️ you!

Tell CalPERS: divest from fossil fuels!

Are you a CalPERS pension member or beneficiary? A California taxpayer? Someone who cares about the future of our planet? If so, please join Fossil Free California in Sacramento on March 18, where we'll tell the Board of Directors of the CalPERS pension plan, the largest pension plan in the U.S., to divest from fossil fuels! The Board needs to hear a broad spectrum of voices, including yours. Read our article to learn more.

All Member Meeting in CA-15

IEB is headed to Swalwell Country — Dublin CA, that is! Hang out with us on Sun. Feb. 24; hear from Tri-Valley GO and Pleasanton-based Students for Social Change. Stay for the breakouts and other fun! RSVP to tell us you're coming so we bring enough shamrocks!

Swalwell staff sit down with CA-15 team

IEB's CA-15 team leads had a very effective meeting with Rep. Swalwell's staff on Feb. 11, as part of Indivisible's National Day of Action. Shutdown had top billing; with the team stressing the toll it took on CA-15’s most vulnerable households. Staff was very interested in our request that Swalwell cosponsor H.R. 678, the Fair Compensation for Low-Wage Contractor Employees Act. Read more in our report of the meeting.

DeSaulnier Town Hall takes aim at gun violence

On Feb. 9, Representatives Mark DeSaulnier and Mike Thompson (D-Napa) held a town hall in Martinez to discuss Democrats' actions to address the gun violence epidemic. They highlighted H.R. 8,, the universal background check bill that Thompson, who's Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, wrote. Good news, H.R. 9 was advanced by the Judiciary Committee on Feb. 13! You can watch the video of the Town Hall here.

Think global, postcard local

A dozen IEB members & friends gathered on Feb. 10 to write nearly 200 postcards to support Democrat Nasreen Johnson's run for Fresno Co. Board of Supervisors. We've got more postcard parties in the works — want to help organize? Email us
