Principal's Message

Dear EGRMS Families,

It is fair to assume that getting back to normal routines is high on every family’s priority list this week.  The same is true for teachers and their classrooms.  While missing 4 days of school in one week is less than ideal, I have great confidence that teachers will make appropriate adjustments and ensure that students are progressing forward in their learning.  As the end of the second trimester is scheduled for Friday, March 1, it is an ideal time for parents and students to conference about grades and for teacher engagement to occur when questions, concerns, or discrepancies exist.  Middle school is the time where student self-advocacy skills are nurtured and developed, so parents are encouraged to involve their child in this communication process to the greatest extent feasible and appropriate.

8th Grade PSAT Date
The PSAT 8/9 exam is scheduled to officially replace the 8th grade MSTEP for English Language Arts and Mathematics this spring.  This is a good development for our students overall as this exam is aligned to the SAT in high school and scores are better connected to students’ college and career readiness.  The State of Michigan determines when 8th grade students are given the PSAT 8/9 exam, however, and it has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, 2019 (the first day back from spring break).  Therefore, we ask that parents understand this unique timing and plan accordingly.

Sincerely,
Anthony Morey
Principal

Kids' Food Basket

Dear Parents,

This year, for our Martin Luther King Day, Jr. Day of Service, our students will be making Supper Packs to be distributed through Kids’ Food Basket, a local organization working to combat childhood hunger. Please find more information on Kids’ Food Basket here.  These Supper Packs will provide the children who are serviced through Kids’ Food Basket one meal for one day. We are planning a school-wide drive to collect the necessary ingredients for the Supper Packs, which will be assembled the week before spring break.

Our school-wide collection drive begins next Thursday, January 31.  All students will be collecting the following items in their BRIDGES classes. Our goal is 50 of each item, so that each Bridges class can assemble at least 50 Supper Packs. Please note items need to be individually pre-packaged.

Items Needed:
Pudding Cups
Fruit Strips
Pretzel or Cheez-It Bag (1.5 oz or smaller)
.28 oz Meat Sticks (two per Supper Pack)

Quart Size Bags
Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,
East Grand Rapids Middle School Champions of Diversity Committee

Spring Drama Club!
Due to our snow days, Spring Drama Club will be beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, February 5th from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons. This spring, we will be learning acting games and improv, as well as working on a one-act play and monologues! This is a very low-key club that focuses on improving existing acting skills and learning more about the techniques of acting.  Club meetings will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Participating in drama club is a great way to try out acting for the first time or to hone your skills for future productions. Students will have an opportunity to perform what they have learned on May 16 and 17 in the Little Auditorium at the high school. Contact Mrs. Kastanek at mkastane@egrps.org with any questions or visit her website at https://sites.google.com/egrps.org/egrmsdrama/home

Students are issued “Way to Go” cards for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility or Personal Best by doing the right thing!  As students receive these cards, they are placed in the container located in the Main Office.  Every Friday, names are drawn and announced during the afternoon announcements.  Each student selected, has the opportunity to pick a prize from the prize basket simply as a way to say “Thanks, we appreciate and recognize you!”

Our next drawing will be Friday, February 8th.

Mischief Managed!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the Dumbledore’s Army of volunteers and donors who made the 6th Annual Interscholastic Yule Ball a spectacular success. We continue to grow in attendance with over 375 EGR students grades 3-12 participating this year. Traditional favorites such as Quidditch and Divination (and more!) were joined by new additions such as the Escape Room Challenge. Crafts included wands, specs, autograph books (and much more!)
