The last several weeks have been more than a little challenging for many people in this country. Record-breaking cold snaps and political turmoil—mentally and physically there have been lots of things to overcome.
Which is why when recently I got involved in a discussion about “rage baking,” I felt a little adrift. Baking to bully one’s way through anger is a thing, apparently. And I tried to appreciate the idea. When life seems tough, it could be a good thing to try and do something productive, and have something sweet and shareable at the end. Instead of wallowing in anger or doing something negative.
But I also think about all the times I’ve heard that the best food comes from the hands and kitchens of people who are preparing it with love and good thoughts. That thinking resonates more with me. If I’m feeling down or mad and I am cooking, it doesn’t bring me nearly as much pleasure as when I’m cooking in a good mood. I do feel that in some way the cook’s emotions find their way into the food, maybe not all of the time, maybe not in an obvious way, but just somehow. I’ll have to mull on that. What do you think?
A winding way of getting to the recipe of the month, which is Slow-Cooked Pork Roast. There is no such a thing as leftover slow-cooked pork. There is only such thing as another brilliant pork dinner waiting to happen. And talk about shareable food—pork shoulders are meant for a crowd.
