FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER 2019 - NUACHLITIR FEABHRA
WINTER SCHOOL: Once again we had a hugely successful weekend, with some of the finest Irish musicians playing and teaching. As a branch, we were very fortunate to have them all. A terrific concert started things off on the Friday night with the highest standard of music on show. The clapometer almost broke with the beginners band – what a performance! Well done all the young ones who stayed till the end. We also had some fine music from our Gortahork guests. The classes proved very popular. Young ones should keep working on all the new tunes they have learned. There was also an excellent session on the Saturday night at the Redhurst.
DANNY KYLE AWARD: We had yet another feast of music from our U18 group at the concert hall on Saturday evening. They certainly wowed the crowd! Congratulations everyone and especially Patricia for putting the music together and organising everything. They just failed to make the final 6, being highly recommended by the judges. Congratulations to you all!
BAND AUDITIONS: Well done to everyone who took part on Saturday. It can be a difficult experience for some of the young ones. The U12A, B and C bands, also the U15A and B were chosen. Any U12’s who auditioned and were unsuccessful, go into the U12D band. Unsuccessful U15’s go into the U15C band.
BAND PRACTICES: Start from tonight at 7pm. People should go into their respective band rooms. Any U12 playing for more than a year may join the U12D band. Beginners should join the U12E band. A list will be provided at the desk for those unsure. U18 auditions are tonight. From the list of 3 reels and 2 jigs, any tunes may be asked for. This will also be the audition for the Grupa Cheoil. Sadly, due to numbers, we can only have one U18 band this year. Next practice is Tuesday, 19th. There will also be a practice for the U12A,B,C and U15A,B on Sat 23rd at 1pm in Woodfarm.
BAND UNIFORM: U15 and U18, black trousers, black shoes, black socks, green polo shirt (available at St. Roch’s - £12). U12A,B,C navy skirt,light blue shirt, black shoes, white ankle socks (girls), black trousers, black socks, black shoes,light blue shirt (boys). St. Roch’s tie also required. Available at class - £6. No uniform required for U12D.E.
GLASGOW FEIS: Sunday, 24th February, in Woodfarm. Solos begin at 10am and bands at 1pm. Naturally, we expect everyone to turn up for the bands. Inform the teacher if there is a problem. Please try to stay on with your families for the afternoon as it is great entertainment listening to all the bands. There is also the 'playoff' at each age-group to find the best overall musician. It is also important for young ones to listen and watch the older ones as part of the learning process.
SCOTTISH FLEADH: Sunday, 28th April. It is similar to the feis, but the first 3 in each event qualify for the All-Britain. It also includes the GrupaiCheoill competition (more about that after the feis}. This year it is being run by St. Patrick’s Branch of CCE. Anyone competing must be a member of Comhaltas. Most people paid their memberships at the start of the session. Those who didn’t should see Moira at the desk (£14 for family membership).
ALL-BRITAIN FLEADH: 22/23rd June in Kirkby Lonsdale, Yorkshire. Accommodation is proving a problem. A number of our families have booked into the Premier Inn, Kendal, about 15 miles away. Anyone else wishing to book can do so directly or via Moira.
