For Freedom

“ For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
– Galatians 5:13

Freedom is the opportunity to make choices. And the defining choice of a person’s life is whether we are to live by the flesh or by the Spirit. Both are within us.

If our primary choice is the flesh, then we will either act as the flesh, or rationalize that we are somehow “getting better” rather than acknowledging that the flesh is an unredeemable force that needs to be set aside each day. If we think we are good, we are likely to either wallow in the guilt of moral failure or rationalize our failings. But if we live in the reality that our primary choice is to trust that Christ has set free, we are empowered to live our best life.

The freedom granted to us is a unique opportunity. It makes us into beings capable of faith and a certain kind of love. The love of service and unity. A love of trust and truth. These are the manifestations of the spirit of God alive within us. The ripples of his glory.

But our flesh is screaming at us. It wants us to use the agency granted us for other means. It wants us to chase idols that make sense to us and are more self-contained.

The infinite joys are only available through the proper exercise of our freedom. The faithful refusal of the flesh’s constant tempting is the only way to unlock the treasures we most long for.
