Letter from the President

Club Members,

Happy Febuary everyone!  Our club has been up to a lot of  exciting activity and  we are anticipating a FUN 2019!   We have experienced some cold this winter, however I am personally grateful to live in the milder climate of NC. I have not envied the recent antarctic temperatures of our friends up North and in the Midwest.

A few recent highlights include our Annual Awards Luncheon held in January at Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant.  It was great to see everyone.  We had close to twenty members and guests attend.   We celebrated the camaraderie of fellow cavalier enthusiasts as well as celebrate those who have gained AKC titles in 2018. The award recipients are listed below.  Huge congratulations to all who were awarded!

You will also find in the Newsletter information for our upcoming March 9th Membership Meeting.  The education topic next month is grooming tips and tricks, presented by Gwen Wells.  We are also beginning Cavalier Conformation for Beginners.  This will be a short 15 minute discussion with a  take home handout.   The goal is to highlight one aspect of correct conformation per meeting, according to the AKC Breed Standard for Cavaliers.

Other upcoming events include  the ACKCSC National held in Cape Cod, MA April 15-20th.  Our very own Concurrent Specialty Shows are coming up August 17th and 18th in Greensboro, NC.   More details below.

There is also information about research studies taking place at NC State Veterinary Hospital for cavaliers , recent AKC rule changes, rescue, recent brags, and member minutes.

Have a great month and look forward to seeing you March 9th!

Sincerely,
Heather Borton

AKC Updates

Dear AKC Exhibitor,

At the December Delegates meeting a change was approved to Rules Applying to Dog Shows Chapter 16, Section 1 in how Best of Winners points can be calculated. As always, the dog or bitch awarded Best of Winners will receive the higher number of points awarded to the Winners Dog or Winners Bitch. The change that has been approved applies to when there are no points available to either the Winners Dog or Winners Bitch. In those instances, the number of regular class dogs in both sexes are added together. When compared to the point schedule, if the total sum of regular class dogs and bitches meets or exceeds the number of competitors needed for one point in its sex, the Best of Winners will receive one championship point.

Please click here for further explanation and examples.

If you have an questions regarding this matter please contact eventnews@akc.org.

Recruiting Cavalier King Charles Spaniels for two studies on Chiari-like Malformations and Syringomyelia (CM/SM)

Chiari-like malformations (CM) are developmental abnormalities of the skull that result in compression of the cerebellum and brainstem. The result of this crowding of the brain within the skull is abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the spinal cord, syringomyelia (SM), which results in chronic pain. This condition is extremely common in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed and many dogs suffer from this pain syndrome. We aim to perform genetic analysis on affected and unaffected dogs with the intent to develop genetic tests that will aid breeders in breeding away from the problem. This research is being funded by the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club Charitable Trust and supported by the AKC Canine Health Foundation. If you are interested in more information and/or think you have a dog that may qualify, continue reading below

Inclusion Criteria:

These projects are for normal and affected Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, ideally older than 2.5 years. MRIs offered at a discounted rate.

  • Genetic Analysis Study – to take part, owners will be asked to:
    • Submit digital MRIs (brain/cervical spinal cord)
    • Submit a DNA sample (blood or saliva)
    • Submit a pedigree (if available)
    • Complete 2 questionnaire forms
    • If dogs have not already had an MRI, MRIs can be scheduled at NC State or Cornell University.

Owners will be asked to submit digital MR images and DNA sample from their dogs and to complete a health questionnaire. Ideally MRIs will have been performed at 2.5 years of age or older, but we will accept studies performed at a younger age. We will be able to schedule MRIs at a reduced cost at NC State, as well as a limited number at Cornell University.

RECENT HAPPENINGS

http://ackcsc.org/2019national

THE CCCKCSC is pleased to share that we will be donating 300 small genuine sheepskin chamois clothes to be included in the Welcome Bags. These chamois are excellent for wiping and blotting teary cavalier eyes.
This weekend the Cavalier Rescue Trust was involved with a large intake of Cavaliers on the east coast. Our incredible volunteer Crisis Team, many of whom are breeders along with Vet and Vet Techs, went into action. Within 24 hours they were triaging and transporting dogs directly to vet offices. Now the dogs need you. It doesn't matter where, or why. What matters are the dogs. Your generosity will save lives, give hope and second chances. Donate today to give them the spay and neuters, dentals, vaccinations and exams. Donate here or on our website at; https://cavalierrescuetrust.org/about/
You can help if you are an experienced Cavalier owner - Volunteer, https://cavalierrescuetrust.org/volunteer/
PLEASE NOTE: These dogs are not ready for adoption yet, so please be patient and watch our website for available dogs in your area. #ItsAllAboutTheDogs
