Happy Tuesday!

Hi, I’m James Kotecki, Director of Marketing at the Durham machine learning company Infinia ML. The captain of this newsletter is on a cruise this week, leaving me at the wheel as the first (and possibly last) GrepBeat guest editor.

Pete, if you're reading this, shut down the Wi-Fi and have another Mai Tai. I'm sure the former is way more expensive than the latter.

Now Full Steam ahead everybody! I plan to pilot this vessel like we're in international waters. Not only am I your ship’s captain, I am also your party captain!

The Internet of Things Is Definitely a Thing

GrepBeat reports that Cary’s ProAxion is prepping to pitch its industrial sensors on the main stage at the CED Tech Conference this month. The sensors are a dramatic improvement on the classic “put your hand on the machine and see if it’s shaking weird” method of predictive maintenance.

Co-founder Justin Rothwell says his sensors are 10,000 times more sensitive than the human hand. But will they ever match the sensitivity of the human heart?

A Loan of One's Own

Do you need cash for a phone, drone or clone? Do traditional banks leave you feeling alone as you bemoan the unknown? One of Durham’s own can change your tone!

Check out the profile of LoanWell on GrepBeat today. It’s kind of like GoFundMe, except people get paid back after they pony up.

Contributors get to reap what they’ve sown. Borrowers get thrown a homegrown bone. And traditional banks play a sad trombone.

Learning Machine Learning

You don’t hand a popular newsletter over to a marketer without expecting a little shameless promotion, right?

Infinia ML is hosting a Machine Learning Bootcamp for Software Developers tomorrow afternoon in RTP. Some tickets are still available for just $5 – and that includes Lonerider brews.

Cold Cash for Hot Tracks

WRALTechWire reports that Durham’s Cultivate Music has raised $350,000. The company will presumably use the money to build their product, which aims to automate music marketing via “pattern recognition, machine learning, and music marketing knowledge.”

But come on – with that kind of money they could do something really meaningful, like renovate the house from The Brady Bunch.

Confession

Despite being a long-time reader, I had no idea what a Grep was until today. Since some of you certainly share this shame, here's the definition from GrepBeat's About page:

Grep is a Linux command to parse a body of data for key terms. In that spirit, we hope to parse all the news about Raleigh-Durham’s startup scene and bring you just the most important, interesting, and intriguing bits.

Exposing my ignorance so you don’t have to. You’re welcome, dear readers.
Because too much news is never enough
Book Recommendation

Empty Planet: The Shock of Global Population Decline
By Darrell Bricker and John Ibbitson

If the authors are right, this book is a preview of the most important trend of the 21st century.

But what will it mean for the Triangle housing market?
Bonus

Actual footage of me trying to finish the newsletter before the deadline. This thing is harder than it looks, Pete!  And yes, I know you're still reading.
