Sustainability Advice Column
Q: I'm excited about sustainability, but my employees aren't. How do I get them engaged? I own a small restaurant in my hometown. - A.

A: Hi, A! Start talking about sustainability initiatives at meetings and in staff communication. Share your passion and open the floor to questions. Use these forums to explain why it's important to you and to the business.

Follow one initiative through its full iteration, show employees the before and after of how a sustainability strategy affects the bottom line, customer communication, and their day-to-day.

Since you own a restaurant, you can also use food as a catalyst for climate change and sustainability discussions. Climate change affects soil composition and nutrients, which has a direct impact on food quality. Encourage employees to do research on how climate change affects food, or do your own and share it with them.

Let me know how the discussions go!
