Duo, Meh.We are just as tired of talking about Duo as you are of hearing about it!

But now that enrolling in Duo no longer impacts email, there's no reason not to enroll!

If you would like some help taking the plunge, or if you just have questions, please stop by one of our Duo enrollment clinics this week--including the first from 1-3PM today (Tue 2/5) in 2203 Social Sciences & Humanities.

Myth Busters: Duo Edition

Mythbusters: Duo Edition

Here are a few common concerns about Duo that we have heard from customers:

Myth: If I lose my phone or hard token, I will be locked out!

You can enroll multiple devices in Duo, and we highly recommend that you do! For example, you can enroll a landline like and office or home phone (or both!) Do you have a tablet in addition to a smartphone? Great! Enroll that, too! You can even enroll a non-smart phone--any device that can receive SMS text messages.

Beyond enrolling multiple devices, you can also call either Social Sciences IT (530-752-8800) or IT Express (530-754-HELP) to request a bypass code. A bypass code can be used for a short time instead of an enrolled device.

Myth: I can't use my phone for Duo unless I have data service!

The Duo smartphone app works even with no data service. Just open the app, and click on "UC Davis - DUO Security" to get a 6-digit code that you can used instead of a push. No data service needed!

Myth: Having to use Duo every time I log in to any UC Davis service will take a lot of time!

Using Duo--particularly with a smartphone--only takes a few seconds. But you also have the option of clicking the "Remember me for 14 days" checkbox when you log in with Duo. After checking that box, you will not be prompted on the same device AND browser for two weeks.

Note that this setting is per browser AND per device: if you use a different browser on the same device, or if you use the same browser on a different device, you will be prompted to log in with Duo.

Myth: If Duo goes down, I won't be able to get my work done!

In truth, there have been some Duo outages over the past few months. But UC Davis has now put a "bypass switch" into place. If there are issues with the Duo service, UC Davis can quickly disable Duo to allow us all to continue working.

Myth: Duo won't work if I'm traveling!

As noted above, the Duo app works even if you don't have a data connection on your smartphone. But if you don't want to travel with a smartphone, there are several other options. One of the best options is a hard token--a small device that works similarly to the offline mode of the app. Hard tokens are available from the campus Bookstore or via your department for $15.
