DBS NEWSLETTER

8th February 2019

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

Thankfully, the air quality this week has been much better, and the students have been able to take full advantage of our holistic DBS education with its Enhanced British Curriculum in particular.

It was interesting to note that the UK government has just launched one of the largest trials in the world to boost the evidence about what works to support mental health and wellbeing. Children will benefit from mindfulness exercises, relaxation techniques and breathing exercises to help them regulate their emotions. Here at DBS, this is already a part of the curriculum.

We had a very successful Scholarship Day at DBS last Saturday, with over 50 candidates being assessed. Internal candidates for Y8 were involved, and they fared very well indeed.

It has been a very busy week at DBS. One of the highlights was a fabulous Chinese New Year day, organised superbly by Mrs Luan and her Mandarin team, and thanks goes to all the parents who supported this. There was a wonderful Assembly by Mr Mildiner’s Y1 Manta Ray class on the solar system, and a terrific Assembly on Thailand by Ms Babb’s Y6 Walrus class. The week was rounded off by a tremendous Music Performance Time today, where Mrs Mayne organised a wealth of DBS talent to perform for the school community.

We have learnt about individual student successes this week, including that of Mark, Baibua and Baiploo in the South East Asian Mathematics Olympiad. Congratulations also go to Aom in Year 7, in the A.T.O.D. International Dance Competition Thailand 2019.

It was good to see many of you at the Accelerated Reader Seminar, the Y5 and Y6 coffee morning and the Y7 and Y8 Parent-Teacher Meetings. Today, we had a most effective inaugural Friends of DBS committee meeting. More information will be given to the parental community soon.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,

Mark McVeigh
Principal
Denla British School, Bangkok

This week, we were treated to a range of musical delights as part of our termly Performance Time. The audience heard a wide range of repertoire, from Debussy's virtuosic Dr Gradus ad Parnassum, the film themes from the Avengers and the Pink Panther, to Bach inventions and Mozart Polonaises. Once again, it was a privilege to see such a display of talent at DBS and the commitment and hard work from all the students involved.

On Tuesday this week at DBS, we celebrated Chinese New Year together with all invited guests and parents. The day started off with a Dragon and Lion dance to start the celebrations, followed by performances by children from EY2 to Y8. A House competition on Chinese culture was held in the afternoon and Y3 to Y8 students worked together to produce a short presentation on their chosen topic. Everyone had a blast learning and celebrating Chinese New Year, the Year of the Pig!

The Y1 Manta Rays’ assembly on Thursday was an exciting showcase of all their learning about space and astronauts during their Science and History lessons. They talked, danced and sang about the solar system, astronauts and the first moon landing. They spoke clearly and confidently in front of the audience, and were particularly proud to show their astronauts green screen film to the other children in Pre-Prep. Great work Manta Ray's you were awesome!

Today, Y1 and Y2 surprised the Early Years children by parading their Chinese New Year dragon through the Village.  The children created the dragon earlier this week during the Chinese New Year house event.
The Y6 Walrus assembly today was a wonderful example of what a student-led environment looks like. The form had worked independently with minimal teacher instruction, to create: a remake of a clip from the Avengers: Infinity War film; an informative powerpoint presentation about the provinces in Thailand, a well-humoured script to entertain the audience, and had specifically chosen props to emphasise the Avengers character that they were playing. The Y6 Walrus class showed great confidence in their own performances of their creative assembly, and should be very proud of themselves. Miss Babb certainly is!
Congratulations to our new Digital Leaders of Technology
TECH Crew is a new student leadership group who will work with Mrs Hall and staff to make sure the use of educational technology is excellent here at DBS. Many students applied, and a big thank you goes to them for showing a desire to be leaders. If you weren't chosen this time, please keep working hard and try again next year. In Assembly, the student representative for each class were announced. They will work in different ways, depending on their year group to attend meetings about tech, trial new Apps and equipment and assist teachers and other students in the day to day use of technology.

Many congratulations to our new TECH Crew:

Y2 JieJie, Aoei, Namcha
Y3 Vincenzo, Ging
Y4 Pun Pun, Pom
Y5 Korn, Freddie
Y6 Jedi, Ethan
Y7 Nammon

HOW TO LIVE HARMONIOUSLY WITH TECHNOLOGY?
Thank you to the parents who attended the Accelerated Reader Parent Seminar on Monday morning. Mr Jordan talked to parents about this exciting new addition to the school’s Prep English curriculum, and how the world renown programme will positively impact on the progress of our students reading. He highlighted how the programme engages children and makes parents an essential part of the process of helping their children achieve success in reading. All Prep parents will soon be receiving their Accelerated Reader Home Connect login, so you can keep up to date with your child’s progress. Please also visit the Parent Portal to see the full presentation. If you have any questions do not hesitate to email Mr Jordan.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Y5 and Y6 coffee morning, where we covered two key topics: student organisation and e-safety.

Ms Babb shared the Y6 Walrus Words of Wisdom, which included important pieces of advice that the Y6's would pass on to younger students preparing to transition into Y6. These wise words ranged from: how students ensure they are organised; how students can ensure effective preparation for assessments; and a range of revision tips that the students have found useful. The need for regular and effective use of communication diaries became apparent, to ensure a clear communication stream between home and school. Students should be recording  homework, reminders and important dates, and allowing parents access to this information regularly. Parents can also use the diaries as a medium of communication and first port of call with Form Tutors.

Mrs Hall reminded parents about the contents of the iPad Pilot Licence (rules for student use of 1:1 iPads) and how these rules are used to ensure the technology is used safely in school. It was suggested that parents go home and have a family discussion about home agreements and acceptable use of technology by all family members in the household.

Interesting discussions ensued about the relationships between Specialist Teachers and Form Tutors, how our partnership supports positive behaviour, and guides students to make the right choices about topics such as homework, wellbeing and relationships.

Today, the inaugural Friends of DBS committee met for the first time.
Their role will be to encourage the support of a community of parents and staff at DBS to enhance the education of the students.
