Event Recap
Women's Economic Empowerment & Entrepreneurship

This event, hosted by White & Case and moderated by Arbora Johnson, focused on the personal experiences of women involved professionally with investing in women and building female-led companies. Wendee Wolfson, an angel investor for decades and currently a leader in a female angel group Next Wave Impact, discussed the importance of asking smart questions and realizing you know as much as most men in the room. Ronit Avni, the founder and CEO of a tech company, expressed her disappointment at the realization that in the tech world, women have to constantly prove their competence -- and her determination to be a success. Kate Schecter shared her story of moving from academia to become the CEO of a nonprofit which empowers women in the poorest of countries by helping them form credit cooperatives.

There was discussion of the gender credit gap, in which female-led companies are much less likely to receive funding, and the importance of finding role models and mentors.

WIIT's Mentoring Program
is Kicking Off!

The Mentoring Program will offer participants access to one-on-one mentoring, peer-to-peer mentoring circles, panel discussions and networking events.  The ultimate goal of the WIIT Mentoring Program is to increase the number of women in policy and decision-making roles in the international trade community in DC.

We encourage BOTH aspiring mentors and mentees to apply to participate in the program.  Mentors get great benefits from participating, including:
  • Recognition as a subject matter expert and leader
  • Exposure to fresh perspectives, ideas and approaches
  • Extension of their professional development record
  • Opportunity to reflect on their own goals and practices
  • Development of their personal leadership and coaching styles
Mentees also benefit from the program by gaining:
  • Exposure to new ideas and ways of thinking
  • Advice on developing strengths and overcoming weaknesses
  • Guidance on professional development and advancement
  • Increased visibility and recognition within the industry
  • The opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge

Applications are due by Friday, February 15th.
Please submit your application to mentoring@wiit.org by Friday, February 15, 2019.

The application should include your resume and a cover note expressing: (i) why you want to participate in the WIIT Mentoring Program; (ii) what professional development or goals you would like to achieve/overcome during the program; and (iii) in what capacity you aim to participate (i.e. mentor or mentee).

Self Confidence is one of the hardest things to achieve, especially for women. WIIT is sharing inspirational musings by women leaders to combat this and help women be less ambivalent to LEAN IN and get to the top!

“Fear of failure is the saddest reason on earth not to do what you were meant to do. I finally found the courage to start submitting my first book to agents and publishers at a time when I felt a conspicuous failure. Only then did I decide that I was going to try this one thing that I always suspected I could do, and, if it didn’t work out, well, I’d faced worse and survived."
