Consumer Alert:
This Rug was Cleaned Onsite
|
|
On a regular basis we calls from customers wanting their rugs cleaned, and are understandably cautious about letting them be taken away for cleaning, many of these rugs are worth thousands of dollars and many have sentimental value.
A few weeks ago we had a spate of calls from people who had their rugs cleaned by onsite carpet cleaners, some of the problems we can fix some we can't. Problems such as colour bleed, shrinkage, browning or water stains to name a few. To clean rugs you need to know the characteristics of all the fibres, dyes and structures used in rugs, and have the training and experience to clean them.
The above photo is of a viscose rug and the customer's child had a great time with a red marking pen on the rug, you can still see evidence of it in the middle of the stain. The brown stain wasn't there before the carpet cleaner arrived and didn't appear straight away, it appeared as the rug was drying, so the carpet cleaner thought he had done pretty well. Unfortunately the customer didn't have confidence in the other cleaner to call him back and found us through his rug retailer.
Follow the link to a short but informative video and by the end of it you will know more about rug cleaning than most carpet cleaners. CLICK HERE.
Below is a photo of the area same rug a nd the area where the stain was, and we have one very happy customer.

Clean
Laughs
The teacher was getting to know the kids.
"What does your father do, Johnny?"
"He's a train driver, Miss."
"And what does your father do, Sammy?"
"He's a policeman, Miss."
"And what about your father, Freddy?"
"He's dead, Miss."
"Oh. And what did he do before he died?"
"He clutched his throat, let out a groan and fell on the floor."

In a Catholic school cafeteria, a nun places a note in front of a pile of apples, "Only take one. God is watching." Further down the line is a pile of cookies. A little boy makes his own note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."
~~~~~~~
An old teacher asked her student, "If I say, 'I am beautiful,' which tense is that?" The student replied, "It is obviously past."
~~~~~~~
On the first day of school, the teacher asked a student, "What are your parents' names?" The student replied, "My father's name is Laughing and my mother's name is Smiling." The teacher said, "Are you kidding?" The student said, "No, Kidding is my brother. I am Joking."

The Challenge Has Been Set. This Fibre Has been Causing Headaches all Over The World
|
|
Over the years we have been given all sorts of challenges when new materials are introduced on the market. For instance when carpet manufactures started producing cut pile polypropylene carpets as cleaners we had to work out the best way to care for it. Polypropylene is oleophilic which means it loves oil and has a low heat tolerance. Wool is sensitive to harsh chemicals, very hot water, and holds moisture, even your modern nylons are sensitive harsh chemicals. Then with upholstery you have a magnitude of fibres and fibre blends, which can be anything from silk, cotton, linen, wool, viscose rayon, and a variety of leathers.
Now we have a new challenge. Rug manufacturers are now making rugs from viscose rayon fibres. Viscose fibres come under a number of different guises such as Art Silk, Banana Silk, Bamboo Silk, and Faux Silk. Unfortunately there are no silk worms used in the production of these fibres, they get their name from their silky look, and to be honest they are an attractive looking rug, and they are a lot less expensive than real silk.
Viscose fibre is a synthetic fibre made from natural products, in essence, much the same way paper is made. the plant pulp is treated with chemicals to form a soft, delicate, shiny fibre.
Viscose as a rug fibre is here to stay and with the proper care and placement there is no reason it that is won't give you a long serviceable life. The first thing you need to be aware of is that the fibre is soft and delicate, a viscose rug should never be placed in a high traffic area. Care should be taken when vacuuming, never use a powerhead brush or beater type vacuum cleaner. Viscose can easily be damaged by water born spills, spills should always be attended to as soon as possible with the right cleaning process.
Your rug should always be treated with a fibre protector, follow the this link to a short video that explains what protector is and how it works CLICK HERE. We highly recommend Fiber ProTector, it has a high repellency and will give you more time if you do have a spill.
Viscose rugs, or any rugs at that matter should never been cleaned on site, the cleaner has no control over your and quite often is long gone before the damage to your rug begins to show. For more information on what viscose is and how it's made follow this link to another short but informative video CLICK HERE. How to Protect Your Tile Floors
No doubt in your home you have both carpet and hard floors, and probably a good bit of tile flooring.
Tile floors are great because they are fairly easy to maintain, and if something is spilled, easy to clean. Some homeowners prefer tiles floors over other types because of their durability and longevity. While soft surfaces like carpet tend to show wear areas in just a few short years, tile floors are quite durable.
Mistaken assumptions
Tile floors, while easy to clean with simple cleaning steps, such as sweeping and mopping, are still subject to issues that take a little extra thought and effort when it comes to maintenance.
One issue many have is with any grout lines in the floor. While tile is fairly non-porous, the grout is not. Light-coloured grout lines can soak up spills and staining substances and be very difficult to clean.
One way to prevent this from happening — although nothing is 100% foolproof — is to protect the grout. You can do this with a quality protective sealant, which you can obtain from the same store you purchased your tile flooring. Most big box stores carry quality grout protectant products. The time to apply this is when the tile floors are new or after they have been thoroughly cleaned, preferably by a professional cleaning service.
With proper application of a quality grout sealant product, you have time to clean up spills before they soak in and stain the grout.
Physical damage
Everyone moves things around, such as their appliances, especially when it is time to do a thorough cleaning. When that happens, your tile floors are in danger!
Sliding a heavy refrigerator or range can scratch and scrape tile floors, leaving unsightly marks. Unless the feet of your appliances are soft, such as coated with rubber, this is something to be aware of.
When moving heavy appliances on tile floors, putting small squares of carpet — upside down — under the front legs will keep damage from happening. Then, as the appliance is pulled out, put squares of carpet under the back legs. If the squares of carpet aren’t visible just leave them there and you won’t have to worry about this issue in the future.
As with any flooring issues you have, from tile floors to carpet, call your favourite cleaning company. After all, it pays to call a pro!

Ask Jolly Jumbuck?
Dear Jolly Jumbuck: At a recent Home Show, and again during a late-night television “infomercial,” I saw an amazing cleaner that came in a large tub and could be diluted with water to be used to clean practically any household surface.
The demonstrations that I saw included removal of some tough carpet stains. They simply poured the cleaner on the stain and it immediately disappeared before your eyes!
Is this stuff for real? I would really like to buy some, but don’t want to be scammed.
Signed, Ms. B. Ware
Dear Ms. B. Ware: I am aware of the cleaners that you describe. They are very “real” and very powerful. But, as my mother always told me, “if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.”
If you need a good driveway cleaner, or something to clean the cat-box with, then this may be the product for you. But, I would never use it on anything that I truly cared about and that list includes most items around the house. I especially wouldn’t use it on carpeting. Here’s why:
The cleaners that you describe work because they have extremely high pH... too high for all but the most durable surfaces. Extremely high pH in a cleaner can strip the wax off of your car, strip the finish and natural oils from your wood floors or furniture, and discolour laminated counter tops, to name a few.
On carpeting, we’ve seen countless instances where a customer used these cleaners and the stain remained, but the area around the stain was bleached out. Oops.
High pH cleaners will also remove any factory-applied stain resistant treatment, thus voiding your carpet warranty.
So, if you need something to clean greasy auto parts with, the miracle cleaner will work. But, if you need a good carpet spot remover, call us. We’ll recommend a product that’s formulated for carpeting.
