Ellie - Nominated for the National Car Club Young Member of the Year Award.

National Car Club Young Member of the Year

This award will be given to the 'youngster' who has demonstrated that they are a truly valued member of their club through their contributions, energy and enthusiasm that they have brought to the club in any function.

Ellie is our youngest committee member and helps out with facebook and has also been assisting with some new regalia items that will be available soon. Ellie is also one of the MGCC members behind the newly set up MGCC Young Members Branch.

The MGB Register wishes Ellie all the best on the 23rd March when the winner will be announced at the 2019 National Car Club Awards at the NEC Birmingham, alongside the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery.

Danny Waters – Marque of Friendship Award.

Danny Waters was presented the Marque of Friendship Award on the 15th February at a lunchtime presentation attended by his MG Car Club friends.  The award was presented by Club Director George Wilder.  The award is presented to members to acknowledge their outstanding contribution to the club over a number of years.

We also made our own presentation to him for his contribution to the Register.  This was a caricature of himself with his MGB which he has entered in concours events for many years.
Danny has been an MG Car Club member for 50 years and on the MGB Register Committee for many years holding the role of Technical Representative.  What Danny doesn't know about MGB’s isn’t worth knowing.  He has helped out countless MGB owners with technical problems together with giving presentations on all aspects of MGB ownership at many MGB Technical Days.
When not working with the MGB Register he is an acknowledged Concours Judge having judged at MG Live for many years and has served his time as an MSA Scrutineer.
Danny is greatly respected by his MG friends so thoroughly deserves the award.

Technical News

Take care of your steering column
Nic Houslip highlights the space between the hollow and the solid shaft forming the collapsible column is injected with a resin based material through two holes in the hollow shaft, these forming a small cylindrical piece that acts as a“shear pin”. Excessive force when removing or refitting the column can result in damage to those resin shear pins. Here he recommends care when handling the collapsible column

Moss Tech Day

Due to some changes at Moss (Europe) we cannot provide the Technical Day scheduled for May at their premises.

We have today managed to relocate the Technical Day to British Motor Heritage at Witney. The date is the same, Saturday 11th May. We are currently working on the programme for the day.

Places are limited to 20 and if you would like to register your interest please email Andrew Vigor - registrar@mgb-register.org.

MG & Triumph Spares Day 2019

This event is a season opener for MG and Triumph owners and can attract up to 10,000 visitors and 500 cars. Despite being mainly indoors the numbers visiting does depend on the weather. It had snowed the previous weekend but the weather warmed up in time for the show date and we had some rain but no snow.

For many organising stands the event started on Saturday afternoon as pitches were identified and some of the cars and trader’s vehicles arrived. Then a very early start on Sunday morning to get set up in time for the visitor arrivals. Start time was officially 9:30am but visitors were allowed in early to avoid excessive queues.

We believe about 500 cars were on display. It is quite rewarding to be present on the Register stand because the show attracts visitors who either own classic cars or have a keen interest in them.  So they have interesting questions to ask and good stories to tell.

The show is really about the traders and in this regard it was well supported. There was a huge range of spares on offer both new and second hand and because the show specialises in MG and Triumph there was plenty of interest.

Marathon MGB Update

Thie Marathon MGB on display at Race Retro - Stoneleigh
On display in Hall4 the Pride of the Paddock display
Race Retro is a show held every year at Stoneleigh Park. It is aimed at people who Race, Rally and Kart so all of the trade stands are of interest. Race championships have stands, one being the MG Car Club. This year I was involved in 2 ways one being with the Marathon MGB that was invited to be in the Pride of the Paddock display where 8 cars were displayed and the visitors voted for their favourite car. It was won by a Classic Fiat500 sprint/hill climb car that was fantastic and deserved to win, the MGB was highly commended.
I was also involved with the Historic Marathon Rally Group stand where we had a Triumph pi and a BMC 1800 that were in the London to Mexico World Cup Rally that celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, with an event at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon on Sunday 19th April 2020.

During the day I had a chat with my namesake John Watson the F1 driver and our friend Rosemary Smith who was over from Dublin for the weekend to promote her book Driven, which is a really interesting story about her childhood and her progression in a mans world of motorsport in the 60’s and 70’s.

If you are interested in Rallying, the stage event held on the Saturday and Sunday is where you can see classic and modern rally cars having a go, a great way to end the weekend.
