PHOTOS OF THE WEEK
We are super proud at Canterbury Junior Hockey club that two, yes two,  of our former members have had the call up to play in the  GB FIH PRO LEAGUE this season.

The FIH Pro League is new to hockey  - one men’s and one women’s league - each comprising the world's best teams will battle it out for glory around the world. 128 matches in all, culminating in a Grand Final in June in the Netherlands.

It’s going to be action-packed, international rivalries will be at their fiercest and the hockey will be of the highest calibre.  As many of you know some of the matches are being held at Lee Valley and The Stoop in April/May.

Home grown talent Grace Balsdon and Lizzie Neal are on the other side of the world right now preparing for the first set of matches - vs New Zealand, Australia and China. This will be Lizzie's GB debut, we wish them both lots of luck.

MATCH REPORTS
U14 Girls  vs TUNBRIDGE WELLS

These two teams had met only a few weeks earlier in an encounter that had produced a two all draw. In today’s match, a sizeable crowd watched Canterbury seize the initiative early on, not let up and play as a well-organized unit. They reaped the results for their hard endeavours and recorded a 4-1 home win.

Starting brightly, under a clear blue sky and sunlit pitch, the girls made a solid start with the defensive line snuffing out any opposition counter-attacks. Some fluid interchange of play on the wings allowed Canterbury to carry momentum towards the Tunbridge Wells goal and Elli Upton was able to win the first of several short corners. Canterbury did not have to wait too long for the first goal. Irmak deftly intercepted a Tunbridge clearance, passed to Evie, who slotted home. Five minutes later, Iona found herself in space towards the top of the D and stuck home a crisp shot to make the score line 2-0. In midfield, Lorna was making some great intercepts, which she carried on doing throughout the game.

Tony had the blessing of having four substitutes for this match, and he was able to rotate players with regularity allowing everyone to have a game. This kept the momentum without losing any fluidity in the Canterbury play.

Sophie Wain, playing upfront, was able to provide an assist to Evie who then scored her second. Things were looking a little too comfortable at this point. Suddenly Tunbridge were able to find some space on the left wing and caught the Canterbury defence napping.  A neat one two ensued and the girls gave away what was a relatively soft goal. This gave the visiting team some encouragement and the rest of the first period was played largely in the Canterbury half.

After the break, one had the impression that the next goal would be crucial. If Tunbridge scored they would have got the wind in their sails, but if Canterbury scored it would be game over. The girls managed to win several short corners and Evie tried hard to get a hat-trick.  However, that crucial next goal appeared elusive and it was not until relatively late on that Iona was able to force an error from the Tunbridge defence and one of the visitors placed the ball in her own net. The victory was now secure.

Georgia had a solid game in goal making some good clearances with her feet. Rebecca and Annie were solid at the back. Georgie and Molly-Anne played a good game in midfield. Annabelle marked well in defence.  Sophie Aiken contributed both in defending and moving the game forward in the second half.  Jess and Darcey showed some neat stick skills in working the ball down the wings. Overall, each girl contributed to the match in a manner that can only bode well for the future.

Tony’s player of the match, for her brace of goals, was Evie Lewis.

U14 Boys B team v Marden B team
Mercian Challenge League

The U14 boys B team were down to the bare 11 on Sunday, until one of our unsuspecting U12 players, Nathan Sumner, was spotted knocking a ball about at Polo Farm. Nathan very kindly agreed to step in as “super sub” for the U14 team and ended up playing a crucial role due to a couple of injuries to our players – thank you Nathan.

The first half was very evenly matched, with both teams playing well and creating good goal-scoring opportunities. The first goal was scored by Marden, but this was quickly matched by a well worked Canterbury goal. Marden then scored again, but the Canterbury boys showed their resilience by drawing level for the second time. Half time score: 2-2. In the second half Canterbury stepped up their level of play, displaying some fantastic passing hockey, and scored a further 3 goals. The Canterbury defenders and goal keeper, Elliot Spencer Tanner, were able to clear every Marden attack and prevented them from scoring in the second half. Final score: 5-2.

Goal scorers: Theo Pantelli x 2, George Coombs x 2, Barney Batchelor x 1

Joint Players of the Match: George Coombs, for showing an impressive level of work-rate & for making a number of excellent passes, and Nathan Sumner – for stepping up at the last minute & playing very well indeed.

Many thanks to James Long for umpiring.

TEAM: Will Jull, Elliot Spencer Tanner, Luca Bywater, Charlie Gotke, Riley Holness, Will Adams, Barney Batchelor, George Coombs, Theo Pantelli, Harvey Godden, Thomas Long Castro and Nathan Sumner.

U18 Girls vs Teddington EH Cup

The girls had a great 3-0 win against Teddington. They now look forward to the Quarter finals which will be vs Surbiton or Southgate.
SOME REMINDERS FROM THE MINI SECTION

Indoor Training
Indoor training Is available for U10s (6.00 to 7.00pm) and U12s (7.00 to 8.00pm) on Wednesday evenings and is open to all.  This format of the game is so beneficial to the outdoor variety that we would encourage everyone to take part.  The charge is £3 a go.

Half Term
Please note that there is no regular training or Little Sticks on Sunday 17th February as this is the half term break.  Some of the squads may be organising practises on this day, but players will be advised separately if this is the case.  We will be back to normal on the 24th February.

Umpiring
Would anyone like to give umpiring a go?  It's not that scarey and we are able to offer a short crash course to help you get underway.  Let me know if you are interested.

Equipment Amnesty
Balls and bibs have gone walkies.  Please check kit bags, etc and return to the Clubhouse.  We can't afford to keep replacing them at the current rate.

Social - Grown Ups
It's a long long time since the grown ups in the Minis did a social.  Ideas please!

Social - Minis
We have a party (very young ones) and a disco (not so young ones) on the radar - are there any volunteers out there that are brilliant at organising this sort of thing?  Help please!

Cancellation Due to Bad Weather
We will be lucky if over the next few weeks we get away without cancelling any sessions, however please note that Minis almost always runs, except in the case of severe frost or snow.  We rarely call off sessions due to heavy rain.

If the forecast is for particularly bad weather we will try to monitor and make an early decision, and in these cases emails may be sent out on the Saturday.

As we are always reluctant to cancel, at times we will leave the decision until early Sunday morning.  On these days, please watch your emails early doors to check what is happening as I will send out details as early as I can.  I know some of the managers are using Whatsapp etc, so you may also hear from them.  Please don't text me or call unless an emergency, because I can't cope with the volume!

If we are forced to cancel the Mini sessions, this does also mean that Little Sticks will not be running.  We rely on volunteers for this group who are usually at the club due to their own children/siblings taking part in the older sessions.  Little Sticks will also be included on the weather updates.
