>> The 2019 General Assembly (GA) meeting took place 30-31 Jan. 2019 in Cádiz, Spain. You can read about the outcomes and highlights from the event here. Meeting minutes and the 2018 activity report have been submitted to GA representatives and substitutes.
>> Reports on EuroMarine 2018 calls are available online (see the following Section).
>> EuroMarine 2019 calls (fellowship programme; foresight workshops and working groups) should be pre-announced around 5 March and should open around 2 April.
Eleven out of seventeen applications were funded under the EuroMarine 2018 edition of its call for proposals. Check out how the involvement of member organisations in the 11 funded activities in the below report.
Under the 2018 (and second) edition of this call, twenty-four fellowships were granted to early career marine scientists to help them attend training events of their choice as part of the marine science networks Young Scientist Individual Fellowship Programme in its second year. Twenty were eventually used.
Activities funded under EuroMarine 2018 call for proposals
Note:
Except when they follow a prior EuroMarine call for participation (as is the case of the OYSTER WG below), allEuroMarine activities reserve some spots to EuroMarine members not already involved at proposal stage, who can apply to participate by contacting the activity leader(s).
Dates and venues may still be tentative and subject to change. Please refer to each activity webpage to obtain the latest information. The online list of the 11 activities funded in 2018 is available HERE.
Lipids in the Ocean: Structure, Function, Ecological Role and Applications - 17-19 Nov 2018, Plouzané (France) - FWS
This foresight workshop was organised by UBO and CNRS, alongside co-organisers AU, UGent, UniHB - MARUM, and Ifremer. The workshop allowed for a comprehensive analysis of lipids in the marine environment and broad perspective of biological, ecological and biogeochemical processes. For more information on this workshop, please visit the link below or email the activity leader.
Orienting Young Scientists of EuroMarine (OYSTER) - 28-29 Jan 2019, Cádiz (Spain) - WG
The OYSTER workshop aims to identify financial strategies with the aim of extending the lifespan of the Young Scientists Working Group to semi or even permanent status within EuroMarine, an arguably much needed and vital service, which is important to the wider scientific community for the present and future generations. A working group will focus on identifying the motivations and concerns of young marine researchers within Europe and EuroMarine member institutions.
Census of Marine Mediterranean Benthic Biodiversity: An Integrative Metabarcoding Approach (CoMBoMed) - 11-14 Feb 2019, Ravenna (Italy) - FWS
Hosted by the UNIBO Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Science (BiGeA), CoMBoMed aims to foster a new European working group able to combine molecular species identification (through barcoding) with morphological identification to develop an exhaustive Mediterranean macrobenthic inventory database that could integrate and improve the universal barcoding databases and the biodiversity and biogeographic databases.
The Role of Macroalgae in the Global Carbon Budget (Macroalgae) - 1-3 April 2019, Aarhus (Denmark) - FWS
This workshop will address the role of macroalgae in the global ocean carbon budget, with the aim of contributing to a revision of the Blue Carbon agenda, and inform policy and management actions.
Definition of a EuroMarine Strategic Agenda to support Blue Growth sectors through the Enhancement of Human resources: a focus on fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood processing (EHUSA) - 27-29 May 2019, Sicily (Italy) - WG
Skills development is key for enabling Blue Growth promoting foresight analyses of the ocean. This working group will therefore define a strategic agenda to identify essential training topics for the next generation of marine scientists as well as specific training needs in the extensive framework of Blue Growth, paying particular attention to Fisheries, Aquaculture and Seafood Processing (FASP) sectors.
Advances in Ocean Biological Observations - Sustained System for Deep-Ocean Meroplankton - 27-29 May 2019, Aveiro (Portugal) - FWS
This workshop aims to review state-of-the-art instrumentation available for plankton observations in shallow and deep waters, and develop a strategy to implement technological innovations for in-situ observations that can be combined with biophysical oceanographic modelling, to provide accurate, reliable and cost-efficient data for deep-sea realms.
Modelling for policy advice under a global change context: expert workshop on measuring and improving the fit of spatial-temporal aquatic ecosystem models - 3 Jun 2019, Barcelona (Spain) - FWS
This workshop will discuss practical cases around the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) food web modelling approach, a freely available and open source spatial-temporal ecosystem modelling software package, but overarching recommendations will be made for the field of ecosystem modelling in general, considering the expertise of participants with other modelling approaches (e.g., Atlantis, Osmose, Bayesian species distribution models, etc.).
Data Needs for Hyperspectral Detection of Algal Bloom Diversity Across the Globe - 4-6 Jun 2019, Oostende (Belgium) - FWS
This workshop plans to discuss how to provide long-term datasets of sufficient spatial and temporal dimension to develop hyperspectral algorithms that span the diversity of surface micro-, macro- and endosymbiotic algal blooms across the globe, as well as how can we best validate hyperspectral imagery and products derived from satellites.
Seaweed Aquaculture: A promising tool for the restoration and sustainable development of coastal environments or an expensive end-of-pipe technology (RECOVER) - 1-3 Feb 2019, Kiel (Germany) - FWS
The workshop will bring together marine biogeochemists, macro-algae experts, modelers, engineers, architects and seaweed farmers, as well as plankton and fish ecologists and regional experts to discuss pathways towards the realisation of sustainable pilot-scale trials in three sample regions, each with unique impacts and constraints.
4th Workshop on Trait-based Approaches to Marine Life - 18-21 Aug 2019, Buckinghamshire (UK) - FWS
The trait-based approach is taken in many areas of ecology and ecosystem science, and the series of workshops on ‘Trait-based approaches to Ocean Life’ has proven to be a rare and vital meeting place for different disciplines in this field. This workshop will serve as the anchor of the series, establishing it as the place to be to engage in this emerging field.
From Sink to Source: Tipping Points of Blue Carbon Storage in Mediterranean Seagrass Ecosystems (BlueTipS) - 1-3 Oct 2019, Montpellier (France) - FWS
Hosted by CNRS alongside co-organisers HCMR and CSIC, this workshop will focus on providing insights on how to improve management practices of sensitive seagrass habitats, by bringing together experts on both tipping pointdynamics and seagrass ecology.
