TOMORROW NIGHT!
Matt Nakoa – Friday, February 8, 2019
Matt Nakoa grew up on a small goat farm in Smyrna, NY and began composing music as a teenager. Following a formative stint as a classical pianist, Matt won scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. There he studied alongside soon-to-be Grammy winners St. Vincent and Esperanza Spaulding among others. After college, Matt toured with his band, The Fens, and eventually landed in New York City’s vibrant piano bar scene. Matt quickly became a star performer at Manhattan’s Brandy’s Piano Bar, with lines outside the door each Saturday night.
Matt’s first solo album, Light In The Dark (2012), is an eclectic pop opus. In contrast, A Dozen Other Loves (2014), explores a simple acoustic palette. This intimate collection has earned many songwriting awards, including a win at Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk Competition. Additionally, Matt’s piano music has received favorable reviews in publications including The New York Times, and his film scoring has been featured by Disney. Matt now tours internationally, recently performing at The White House, throughout India, and regularly with folk music icon Tom Rush. https://mattnakoa.com/

Our February 2019 theme is Challenges:
Life is a series of challenges because it is a succession of changes --- changes and challenges are linked. Common wisdom tells us that facing and overcoming life’s challenges is how we grow in strength and character.
Our country too faces challenges in many spheres --- the environment, racism, and healthcare, to name but a few. The Dalai Lama says “To remain indifferent to the challenges we face is indefensible. If the goal is noble, whether or not it is realized within our lifetime is largely irrelevant. What we must do therefore is to strive and persevere and never give up.”
Whether personal, national, or global, challenges are a fact of human life. Join us this month to hear our speakers on this topic, and to be part of the discussion circle following the service.

Rev. Charlie Tyler
"The Challenge of Living This Day and Only This Day"
It is tempting for me to look so much into my tomorrow that today is missed. The challenge seems to be living my today, and just my today in a way that can and will be integrated into my tomorrow.
Perhaps this challenge will be meaningful.

The Palmetto Plant Eaters Club and the UU Congregation of the Lowcountry (UUCL) are honored to bring the film 'A Prayer For Compassion' and its director Thomas Jackson to Bluffton, SC, for an exclusive prescreening. Join us for the full film and a Q&A with Thomas Jackson afterwards. A donation of $10 or more is requested and will be split to benefit the social justice work of UUCL and the film's final funding.
Doors open at 6pm on Friday, February 22, 2019. Film starts at 6:30pm. UUCL is at 110 Malphrus Road in Bluffton, SC.
A Prayer for Compassion is a feature length documentary that strives to inspire and encourage those already on a religious or spiritual path to expand their circle of compassion to embrace all life, regardless of species, and make choices in alignment with this value.
The film follows Thomas Jackson on a quest across America, that ultimately takes him to Morocco for the UN Climate Conference and throughout the Indian subcontinent to ask the question, “Can compassion grow to include all beings? and Can people who identify as religious or spiritual come to embrace the call to include all human and nonhuman beings in our circle of respect and caring and love?”
Drawing on traditions including Christianity — evangelical, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Friends (Quakers), Seventh Day Adventism, Unity, and more; Judaism; Islam; Hinduism; Buddhism; Jainism; the Native American tradition; Unitarian Universalism; Zoroastrianism; and the “spiritual but not religious” point of view — 'A Prayer for Compassion' calls on people of faith and spiritual seekers of every stripe to come together to bring about a world in which “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them…They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:6 and 11:9)
