My long walk in the park: Testing our limits
 That's me last Saturday morning, 1:15 am, bundled up and ready to take a shuttle to C&O Canal National Park to start walking. At 3:30 am, with wind chill in the teens and small lamps on our heads, 145 of us began the FreeWalkers' annual Kennedy 50-Mile Walk. I'm proud of how far I walked. It was tough, and I loved it. Call to action: R.I. proposing $28M cut from bike/walk projects
Dozens of Rhode Island bike/walk projects — greenway extensions and maintenance work — stand to be delayed or cancelled by the state's Department of Transportation in order to shift funding to highway work. Ocean State residents have until February 28 to voice opposition to the proposed funding shift.

New hire doubles communications capacity;
two regional coordinator positions open
Help advance the Greenway in Florida and Virginia/North Carolina
John Martin III joins the East Coast Greenway Alliance at the end of this month as communications manager. Martin will handle media relations, event promotions, and social media primarily. Lisa Watts will shift to a new role as content manager, responsible for our website, publications, and news and feature stories. Martin, who lives in Chapel Hill, served the last five years as associate communications director with USA Swimming, the sport’s governing body. He previously held a similar role with USA Triathlon and worked seven years in athletic communications at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his alma mater.
Meanwhile, two regional Greenway coordinators recently stepped down from their positions. Paul Haydt, our Florida coordinator, left to pursue business opportunities. Kathryn Zeringue, our Virginia and North Carolina coordinator, left to serve as a transportation planner in the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Division.

Leading with trails: Greater Philly greenway leaders
will open Mid-Atlantic Summit Thursday, April 4

A panel of trail leaders in the Greater Philadelphia area will open the first night of our Mid-Atlantic Greenways & Trails Summit, sharing the history of local greenway segments along with recent and future successes. Andrew Johnson, director of the watershed protection program with the William Penn Foundation, will moderate the panel discussion. The opening reception, following an afternoon of mobile workshops, will include poster viewing and networking time.
Friday's schedule includes a morning keynote with New York City Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver and mid-day addresses from Pennsylvania's Secretary of Conservation & Natural Resources, Cindy Dunn, along with Patty Elkis, planning director with Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commissioner. Attendees can choose from two dozen workshops on Friday and from four mobile workshops on Saturday.
