February Newsletter

With Valentine's Day celebrations in so many classrooms, let's make this month a Love & Kindness month. Practice noticing small kindnesses that people extend to you and that you extend to others -- and to yourself!

Foundations of Mindfulness Preview

Earlier this month, I give people a view from the inside of the classroom so you could see how and why it matters so much--and is so fulfilling--to share mindful awareness with teens. If you missed the special  online event, you can listen to the audio here

Social Innovation Awards

We're so proud that Inner Strength received the 2019 Philadelphia Social Innovator's Silver Award in Anti Violence.

What does it mean to be a "social innovator," whose footsteps are we walking in, and what are the challenges of stepping out and experimenting with methods that affect real people's lives?

People, Place & Pivot Points

“Finding a true inflection point is perhaps the mysterious instinct and inner vision of a social innovator. That point could be anywhere and almost anything. With the right eyes and inspiration, a sense of the possible can grow into a reality that moves and improves our culture in unexpected and profound ways.”

Sanctuary. Re-Set. Mindfulness. Rooms

Do you remember walking through your high school hallway, feeling a little uneasy and exposed? Can you imagine what a difference it might have made if there was one dedicated place in the building that was a room of calm, curiosity, and care? Where you could go to be still, to reflect, to re-set . . . to "get yourself together" just when you needed it?

The more deeply Inner Strength embeds within any particular school, we find that administrators, teachers, and students all feel the need for a physical space that represents goodness and kindness. A space not used for punitive disciplinary measures, for raised voices, or for antagonism.

Just having a space dedicated to that, furnished just a little differently, creates a space in the consciousness of the school. Kids refer to it. Teachers want to use it. Mentors want to tutor in it. When you have a physical space, however small, whether it's tucked away in a corner of the little used fifth floor of the school, it serves as a marker and shows that you value these qualities and tools that promote them.

It does take time and energy to get these rooms established, we are just at the beginning in two schools . . . and we already have two more that want to implement.

If you are a school looking for assistance in creating a space like this and providing oversight and programming, contact us.

Classes Begin in
37 Classrooms

The beginning of the semester is always an exciting time. All the Inner Strength instructors are itchy to get back into the classrooms. We have two new teachers shadowing as they prepare to teach ISF classes on their own. This Spring, teens in 37 classrooms will learn to focus, practice kindness, and think in terms of large scale systems. Good stuff!

We're Hiring!

If you are an experienced Program Manager . . . if you are interested in contributing to a great organization poised for growth . . . if you love working in a collaborative team environment . . .
