Reprogramming our brains,
one interactive game at a time

They are everywhere. You may already know one, or even be one.
Every year, more than a thousand UCR students pass through the doorways of the Brain Game Center for Mental Fitness and Well-Being. Located in University Village, UC Riverside students participate in controlled, non-invasive psychological and neuroscientific research through interactive games and apps.
“I did three different gaming sessions, one over the course of a month and the other two were one to two day sessions.” said psychology student Sammi Miller.. “The first one was an app on an iPad that they give you to play, and all the games are actually in the app store available to download. It actually did help with my memory, because now I have instances where I remember random stuff I don’t think I would’ve remembered in the past.”

"I think so far in my nineteen years of life, being a graphic design intern for CHASS/UCR has been my proudest accomplishment. Having a job that allows me to do what I'm most passionate about makes it feel less like 'work' and more of a hobby. It's amazing to know that you can make an impact even if it's small."

Writers Week continues, Feb. 11-Feb. 15
Now in its 42nd year, UCR's Writers Week is more popular than ever! Monday night's first event was standing-room-only, featuring novelist Margaret Atwood ("The Handmaid's Tale"). There are still plenty of opportunities to attend more writers events, happening on-campus all next week, Feb. 11-Feb. 15 in INTS 1128.
Each day will feature up to four chances to see renowned authors and listen to them talk about their creative process, during one-hour readings and Q&A's.
Of the 20 authors who will be appearing at UCR, here is just a sample:
Katie Ford is an award-winning author and UCR professor of creative writing. Evolve Benton is a prominent social and racial justice writer from Los Angeles. Michael Nava is author of an acclaimed series featuring a gay, Latino criminal defense lawyer.
There are so, so many more talented writers who will be here, each with their own unique perspectives and gifted ways of storytelling. See the full schedule here.
For those who love writing or aspire to become published, this is an incredible opportunity you won't want to miss.
All events are free, here on campus and open to the public -- so get there early to grab a seat!

Micro-Operas breaking traditional norms

Sometimes good things come in small packages. Dana Kaufman, visiting assistant professor in music composition, proved that last month with “An Evening of Micro-Operas: A Workshop Performance,” performed on December 6 and featuring six mini-operas in the span of 90 minutes.
The performance was part of a quarter-long seminar for graduate students, “Graduate Composition Seminar: Creating Micro-Operas," that explored and pushed the boundaries of more traditional opera. The culminating performance featured a multitude of operatic genres, such as rock opera, to works that included electronics, to bel canto opera.
