The Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in Chinese culture. The fourteen-day holiday season celebrates fresh starts, family togetherness, and high hopes for a joyful, healthy, and prosperous new year. All over the world, Chinese people travel home to spend time with their families, feast on traditional New Years dishes including dumplings and nian gao (sticky rice cakes), and set off firecrackers to welcome the new year.
2019 is the Year of the Pig, the final animal in the 12-year Chinese Zodiac cycle. To be even more precise, 2019 is the Year of the Earth Pig! Rotating every two years alongside the animal cycle are the 5 Elements: Metal (金), Water (水), Wood (木), Fire (火), and Earth (土), which are thought to bring balance and harmony. The first year of an element is its yang (阳 male) year and the second is its yin (阴 female) year. 2018 was the Year of the yang Earth Dog and 2019 is the Year of the yin Earth Pig!
Those born in the Year of the Pig are said to be artistic, refined, and intelligent. We wish you and your family a wonderfully happy and creative New Year!
