Luke Buescher Uganda

Dear Friends and Family,
I pray this letter finds you abiding in the love and joy of our Savior.

The North is on fire!!!
A recently burned field in the village.

Driving through "The Bush" at night is always a bit of an adventure; skinny roads swarming with hundreds of well concealed people and animals, three to five foot craters to avoid, and overloaded lorries with a propensity to drive with their brights on at ALL TIMES, are just a few of the challenges you might face. Add to that being surrounded by 30 foot walls of flame, and it can start to feel like you somehow landed in an exciting war documentary, or end of the world thriller! for Uganda, that's just another Friday night in dry season. As everything dries out from lack of rain and high temperature, Northern Uganda has decided it's the best time to burn fields, trash, and just about anything else. There is so much burning happening, that it's been raining ash for a month straight, and the smell of smoke is a constant companion.

My trip back to the states was eventful, to say the least. I had hoped to be able to meet with many of you during my time in Colorado, unfortunately my tonsillectomy ended up having a much more extensive recovery time than I was expecting. I landed in Colorado December 5th, had about a week of doctor's appointments, then had my tonsillectomy on the 12th. In about 1% of people who have this surgery the incisions can open back up again, which requires a second surgery to re-cauterize. on the 16th my incisions opened back up and I had a second surgery, then on the 19th they opened up again! that means I had the wonderfully enjoyable experience of three surgeries within 9 days. I suppose that makes me unique, as I am in the 1% of the 1%! unfortunately this means I spent the entire month of December in bed, and unable to talk.
Snow and cold temperatures outside my parent's house in Colorado the night before I traveled back to Uganda.
After a "restful" trip back to the states, I arrived back in Uganda on January 2nd, after traveling through New Years day. Driving back up to Gulu, and getting settled in, I was surprised to find how much Uganda already feels like home! It feels great to be back, minus the unavoidable lung damage caused by the smoke of dry season. Also, the drastic difference between the snowy cold temperatures of Colorado and the high 90's of Gulu came as quite a shock!

In January, we taught through Paul's epistles in the first class, and the book of Deuteronomy in the second class.

This month God laid it on my heart to start a youth and young adults fellowship at Calvary Chapel Gulu. Two weeks ago we started getting together on Thursday nights to eat together and study through the book of 1 Corinthians. So far, it has really been a huge blessing! I am finding that God is using it powerfully in the lives of those attending, and my life as well. I have had a few people tell me already that it has either helped them to begin reading their Bible's again, or even to begin a devotional life where there hadn't been one before. God is good!
Settling back in here in Uganda, and enjoying one of the many delicacies unavailable in the United States, "Krest" bitter lemon soda.
As always please keep myself, and the ministry here in your prayers. You are a part of all that God is doing through His church here in Uganda!
