This month we celebrate Women’s History month, and I’ve noticed that women are getting some long overdue recognition for their contributions to history. NASA recently named a facility in honor of Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who was instrumental in America’s first successful trip to the moon. The New York Times recently featured the work women did with the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA. We’ve always been part of history. UCF is proud to be home to many successful female investigators, many of whom we’ve featured in this newsletter. But did you know this little fun fact? Eight women scientists have been inducted into UCF’s Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors. Together they have 34 patents for their discoveries. They are: Qun “Treen” Huo and Xiu Fang “Nadine” Guo from the NanoScience Technology Center, Annette Khaled, Ratna Chakrabarti, Li-Mei Chen and Barbara O’Hara from the College of Medicine, Mary Williams from the National Center for Forensic Science, and Cherie Yestrebsky from the College of Sciences. From seeking cancer cures to developing techniques for cleaning up toxic chemicals, they are making an impact. Thank you for your passion and your work.
