How to advance your paintings.

Today's notecard is from another art book, which I have read cover to cover several times.  The book is Composition of Outdoor Painting by Edgar Payne.  Each time I read it, I take something new away.

1.  Art Theory - How to Study/What is Art
Composition of Outdoor Painting by Edgar Payne
Ch 2: Selection and Composition - Preliminary Sketches, p. 42-43

Real advancement generally comes from studying and experimenting with one problem until it is mastered. So the repetitive depiction of a single subject is encouraged.

If the subject is worthy, It will bear much observation and a number of pencil sketches and even oil sketches from the same or several view points.  Each study made, becomes better.
_______________________
This is an exercise I assign my students during breaks between class terms.  It is one I follow through with as well.  A few summer's ago, when I was working to improve my plein air skills, I painted four mornings in a row a view of my backyard.  Each was an exploration and I learned something new from each process.  This is my favorite way to learn a new subject.
