Sunday School Update -
your participation encouraged!

The Sunday School has been learning about three women in the Bible:  Priscilla, Dorcas and Lydia.  Though these three women are named, their stories are often very short, without a lot of context or details about who they were or the times they lived in.  Their fathers, brothers, husbands, sons or other related men are often named.  Beyond the obvious cultural and social realities of women in Biblical times, what are we to take from the fact that even most of the named women are not prominent in the Bible?

We are inviting you to join us in this investigation, by coming to church on Sunday and selecting one scripture to explore about an unnamed woman in the Bible.  As you do so, consider what the woman’s story has to teach us.  If you have time, follow her story by reading before and after the specific scripture to broaden your understanding of what was happening in her day-to-day world, as well as the larger spheres of time and place.  I also found that some words like “witch” or “wench” had to be looked at more deeply.  Those women were often healers, oracles, or psychics, not in the mainstream, sometimes consulted and often demonized, or at best misunderstood.

Sunday, February 17: Organizing 101 Training, Immigration, 1:00-4:30pm

Location: Burlington, First Congregational Church, 38 S. Winooski Ave.  05401

This training precedes a New England summit training on nonviolent action to restore human rights in immigration. Learn the basics of the VIA organizing model - one-or-one conversations, picking an issue, conducting research, preparing and implementing a public action event, and evaluating and reflecting on the process - and how you can apply this model to issues of concern in your community.

We will carpool from central Vermont, leaving at noon this Sunday.  Please call or email:
Sandra Batchelder, 802 505-1265, sandybatch@icloud.com  or Melissa Battah,                    802 651-8889, melissa@viavt.org.

Sally Giddings Smith
“Out, Around, and Back Again: Paintings from California, France, and Maine.”
From the artist:
These paintings reflect my life since I left the Old Meeting House in 1990. Although I have no work from my life in DC, I will have a notebook of the houses I have designed, or renovated, plus a book of poetry which I illustrated for the Point Lobos Preserve in Carmel, California - in addition to the paintings.

Also included will be a series of paintings and prints I made for Valentine’s Day. Sarah and Richard Brock own one of the originals, which will be included. I hope you all will enjoy them!
