Booking is now open for our annual conference and AGM
 
The event will be held in Coventry on 23 May. Remember that places will be limited so we advise groups to book early by using this link. This year's conference will focus on the participation and engagement of people seeking sanctuary and will allow ample time for networking to enable people to share and learn from one another. More information to follow shortly
Margaret Fingerhut-Fundraiser tour


 
Margaret Fingerhut, an internationally acclaimed pianist is one month into her Far From the Home I Love piano series fundraiser tour. Five of the 26 planned concerts Margaret has performed so far and have collectively raised over £9,000 for City of Sanctuary local groups

School of Sanctuary Award
 
 
Well done to all the  staff and students at  Light Oaks Infants School, Clarendon CP School, Lark Hill CP School, St Joseph the Worker RC School, Brentnall CP School and the Friars CP School in Salford in becoming a School of Sanctuary.

Sheffield resists deportations to Zimbabwe

We are inspired by this blog about how Sheffield, the first City of Sanctuary continues to mobilise local people to protect Zimbabweans from deportation. We are concerned that deportations to Zimbabwe are on the rise despite the fragility and uncertainties. 
Hasting & Rother Refugee Buddy Project
 
The Hastings & Rother Refugee Buddy Project puts local volunteers in contact with newly arrived refugees building friendships and community. They share food, help navigate the town, organise social events... read more about it here

Early Action: A new approach for asylum support
 
The Asylum Early Action partnership are looking for organisations working with people at all stages of the asylum process to join them in changing the way we support people, to help prevent them reaching crisis point. Read more on  how your organisation can get involved here

Oxford Sanctuary Pass scheme
 
Support Oxford Sanctuary Pass scheme is a community initiative to provide free bus passes to destitute sanctuary seekers in our city. 

Help End Indefinite Detention
 
Thank you to all our groups and supporters in the network who responded to the Detention Forum call for social media action this week . You can find a list of tweets to date here The Detention Forum has published a blog this week summarising some of the key changes in the shape and function of immigration detention estate over the past year. It includes open source crafts that you're welcome to download and share.  We urge all our supporters to to seek their MP's support to end indefinite detention.

 Opportunity for Financial Support
 
Prisoners of Conscience (PoC) is looking for City of Sanctuary groups who are interested in becoming a referral agency and refer prisoners of conscience to the agency for financial support. They support people including refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. Read more about it here
 Forced Migration Toolkit
 
Doc Academy & Comic Relief have teamed up to produce this brand new & FREE toolkit to help develop students' media literacy skills, critical thinking & empathy around the issue of Forced Migration. A wonderful resource to use in the classroom, form and tutor groups, after-school groups and as part of assemblies and year-group projects. The toolkit can be downloaded from here
 
Improving Access to Higher Education Institutions
 
Birkbeck, University of London are offering 20 scholarships to enable people to access graduate and postgraduate courses. They also have a free taster day for would-be sanctuary scholars. For more information see here
New Resources for Sanctuary Breaks and Hosting Schemes
 
We invite you to look at the new resources now available on the Greater Lincolnshire Area of Sanctuary website to support Sanctuary breaks. These include Safeguarding, policies DBS and various useful templates.Villagers in Lincolnshire host people seeking sanctuary for short periods providing respite and positive shared experiences. For more information click here
A call for artwork on the theme of ‘Home’
 
 The Cambridge-based Charity CamCRAG (Cambridge Convoy Refugee Action Group) are taking submissions for an art exhibition supporting the homeless in Cambridge and  Northern France.  More details can be found here
Report in 'Seeking Asylum'
 
The report ‘Seeking Asylum’ was compiled in early 2019 by the Baobab Women’s Project, CARAG, Women with Hope, MEENA Centre for Women and Children, Coventry Migrant Women’s Houses and Refugee Rights Europe is available here. The report specifically highlights the shortcomings in the UK’s fulfilment of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
 Free online courses
 
REDRESS, which is dedicated to ending torture and seeking justice for survivors worldwide,  has prepared a free e-learning course  designed for community organisations and similar organisations without specialist legal knowledge. Check it out here.
 
Job Opportunities 
  • Counterpoints Arts is recruiting a freelance project manager with specialist communications skills to help deliver Refugee Week 2019 while the current Coordinator is on maternity leave.  The role is London-based for 3.5 days at a rate of £35K pro rata equivalent, for April - June and September 2019.
