Allyson Our Advocate

Why was Allyson in Washington D.C.? What does this have to with the DeKalb County School Board?

Did you know one of the many responsiblities of DeKalb School Board Members is to advocate on behalf of our school system to federal and state lawmakers?

Allyson and several other board members attended the National School Board Association Conference in Washington DC. She completed Advocacy Institute training and then met with US Senators Johnny Isakson and David Perdue as well as Representatives Lucy McBath and Hank Johnson. Allyson was promoting the full funding of monies due under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Currently, this program is only funded at 10% which leaves potential money for students on the table.

Board of Education Business

A few highlights from the February 4th Board of Education meeting:

* The Board and Superintendent value our teachers and pledge to correct the salary steps. The District will analyze the problem, correct the mistakes, learn from the experience, and remain accountable for getting this right.
* The Board approved a technology package and furniture/fixtures for John Lewis Elementary, which is on track to open this fall.
* The Board approved redistricting for schools in Druid Hills and Cross Keys impacted by the opening of John Lewis Elementary.
* The Finance Department is conducting a survey to help develop the FY20 budget. CFO Bell presented the Board with results (through yesterday) and he will continue to update us as more stakeholders complete the survey. Please take the survey

The next DCSD Board Meeting will be on Monday, March 4th.
The first 4 Feedback Session was a great success.  DeKalb parents and community stakeholders provided Allyson with valuable input.  The next 4 Feedback will be Monday, February 11th, from 5-7pm at Panera on Henderson Mill Road.  All residents are welcome, not just those from BOE District 4.  Plan to stop by and meet Allyson!
