Deagon Ward E-News

February 2019

The year is off and racing with January just about a distant memory now! School is back and I've already had the opportunity to attend school leader induction ceremonies with plenty more to come. It's great to see a record number of schools participating in Council's Active School Travel program this year in the Deagon Ward with Shorncliffe, Sandgate and Nashville State Schools joined by Sacred Heart and St Kieran's Schools this year.

We have wrapped up our first big festival of the year, Australia Day by the Bay and planning is already under way for more great festivals and events in our special community. Keep a look out for the March edition of the Sandgate Guide for an exciting announcement of a brand new event coming to Sandgate this year for music lovers.

You may have seen recent media reports about the poor state of many footpaths across Brisbane. I have a number of surveys for new footpaths in Sandgate and Zillmere underway at the moment with recently completed footpaths in Taigum, Boondall and Brighton. If you see damaged or missing sections of footpaths, please report them to my office or directly to Council. I have joined several of my fellow Councillors in calling for more investment in footpath repair and maintenance.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page to keep up to date with local news and events.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Cheers

Jared Cassidy

Out and About in the Community

'The Hair Holiday' Book Launch

I joined Maddie and her family at the launch of her new book, The Hair Holiday, in the Sandgate Town Hall.

Hair loss is a challenging journey for children undergoing cancer treatment - but in many cases it’s not gone forever! The book is written for people of all ages undergoing treatment and their family and friends.

Maddie was kind enough to donate 10 copies to the community and has asked me to put the call out to those who would benefit from a book.

Please let me know if you are or have a family member or friend going through treatment or are part of a support network and would like a copy of the book.

Newest Kurbingui Graduates

The latest group of trainees in the Certificate I in construction and Certificate I in Business Administration have graduated from Kurbingui at Zillmere.

Kurbingui have been delivering training through the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work program for many years now and are very successful in supporting the trainees through to work - many of whom haven’t had the opportunity before.

It’s great to see community supporting each other and getting great results!

Australia Day by the Bay 2019

Australia Day by the Bay was another huge success this year!

I was thrilled to join with Wayne Swan in organising the celebrations once again this year. We welcomed 56 brand new and very proud citizens in the Sandgate Town Hall alongside hundreds of other local residents. Our local citizenship ceremony has become a real institution and it’s such a great way to celebrate Australia Day. The day wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Zonta Northside and CWA Sandgate.

We also saw big crowds for our free Aussie BBQ at the Volunteer Marine Rescue in Shorncliffe, a new location for this year's celebrations, for lunch with lots of free entertainment on offer for families.

The day finished with the legendary Dick 'Tosser' Turner Billycart Races in Cotton Street, sponsored by Stirling Hinchliffe. Other local sponsors for our Australia Day by the Bay celebrations included the Bracken Ridge McDonalds, Northside Family Law, Kuhn Corp Printing, Remax Sandgate, Sandgate Hawks AFL and Sandgate Gators Cricket

Back to School Event - Kurbingui

I support the back to school event each year where the team at Kurbingui Youth Development Ltd work with their many partners in the community to get kids ready for school next week with plenty of gear for the school year along with a fresh haircut. Well done team!
