Shake It UpDate - Latest News in Parkinson's Research

Dear Shake It Up Supporter,

We are very grateful to the Federal Government for their recent $30 million investment over 5 years in the Australian Parkinson’s Mission (APM). The APM is an international collaboration between Shake It Up, the Garvan Institute, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, Cure Parkinson’s Trust UK and Parkinson’s Australia. This funding grant will support national clinical trials in Australia using repurposed drugs aimed at finding new treatments to slow or stop the progression of Parkinson’s integrated with biomarkers and genomic sequencing to personalise patient outcomes for Parkinson’s.

While we are a key driver of the Australian Parkinson’s Mission, we are also committed to continuing our funding for other world leading Australian research projects together with our partners at The Michael J. Fox Foundation.  Today, there is a robust pipeline of research underway into Parkinson's from a variety of areas including bio-markers, genomics, wearable technology to more effective drug treatments and therapies. We hope that you will continue to support Shake It Up to enable our Australia researchers to continue in the fight to unlock the Parkinson’s puzzle.

Our annual Pause 4 Parkinson’s campaign will run for the month of April this year celebrating World Parkinson’s Day. It's a great opportunity to get on board and show your support whether it be a bbq, trivia night, cake stall, morning tea or any event with family and friends or a workplace gathering to show your support for a colleague or family member of a colleague living with Parkinson’s. We also have corporate sponsorship packages available and you can download a sponsorship pack here.

This year we are pleased to be the lead partner in the 2019 INSIGHT into PD Summit. Over 50 world leading experts across a broad range of topics including neuroplasticity, mood and motivation, healthy ageing, thinking and memory, balance, freezing and gait and nursing and community support will be covered over the three days of the Summit. You can watch the Summit in the comfort and privacy of your home over an extended period making this an extremely beneficial resource of information for anyone living with Parkinson’s, their carer’s, family and friends. The Summit is aiming to raise $1,000,000 for the international Parkinson’s community. When you book we ask you to select Shake It Up as your preferred charity and 100% of ticket proceeds will support Parkinson's research. Early bird prices are now on sale and if you purchase a ticket this weekend you will also receive a FREE COPY of the 2018 INSIGHT Presentations.

We have funded a number of new research projects since our last newsletter including an eHealth and smart garment technology to prevent falls in people with Parkinson’s disease at NeuRA.

Finally, from all of us at Shake It Up we wish you a happy and safe 2019!  The year is off to a great start and the team at Shake It Up will continue to do all we can to provide HOPE and a better quality of life for everyone living with Parkinson’s.

Until next time,

NEW Trial Funded - Smart Socks to Address Falls and Gait

Falls are a common and often devastating event in the lives of people with Parkinson’s disease. They are frequently caused by gait impairments, postural instability and freezing-of-gait, a brief absence of forward momentum of the feet despite the intention to walk.

The program uses visual, audio and sensory cues to help rewire the parts of the brain that control walking in people with Parkinson’s and involves Smart Socks with haptic feedback and core microelectronics.
