Campus Sustainability Highlights

UC Davis' GreenMetric Ranking Still Best in U.S.

The University of California, Davis, maintained its “greenest-in-the-U.S.” status in the 2018 University of Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric World University Rankings. The rankings from UI have UC Davis holding onto the No. 3 spot overall. This makes UC Davis the GreenMetric leader in the United States for the second year in a row. Only one other U.S. institution made this year’s top 10. For 2018, the questionnaire sent to universities went into more detail on efforts and programs to improve sustainability on campus.

UC Merced hosts its first Student Leadership Institute for Climate Resilience

Students got a crash course in how to lead the world in moving toward sustainability last week as part of the Student Leadership Institute for Climate Resilience (SLICR). The three-day residential program introduced students to the campus’s carbon neutrality, sustainability, food action and environmental justice communities through activities and tours and discussed strategies about how the students can take actions to help the world achieve a regenerative economy — one that is maintainable and does not exploit workers. SLICR was developed at UC Irvine, and staff and faculty from several UC and CSU campuses attended a UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative training session to learn how to lead their campus’ program.

Rising to the Occasion: UCSB Research Team Tackles Surging Sea Levels

Dr. Lisa Stratton and her team at the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity & Ecological Restoration (CCBER) have embarked on a mission to transform a golf course into a diverse restored habitat: an estuary teeming with native species, a space for passive recreation and active research for UCSB students and faculty. Even better, it’s specially graded to withstand the sea level rise that the Santa Barbara community is bracing for in years to come.

UC Santa Cruz Farm Provides Produce for Students

These days, skyrocketing education and housing costs mean that even more students are sacrificing healthy eating to pay their tuition, rent and other expenses. After a 2016 University of California report revealed that 43% of undergraduate students and 26% of graduate students have struggled with hunger or putting healthy food on the table while in school, UC Santa Cruz students stepped in to help. The students are part of an effort to grow crops on the 33-acre UCSC Farm and Garden — making sure that campus food pantries, pop-up markets and dining halls are stocked with healthy, affordable produce for students.

The First Student-Authored Berkeley Haas Sustainability Report

The Haas Business School Association’s (HBSA) Sustainability Committee just published the first-ever student-authored Berkeley Haas Sustainability Report. It's a sweeping overview of where the school stands with its sustainability efforts in its buildings, classrooms, and centers. The report includes details of energy, waste diversion, and water use in different campus buildings with a special focus on Chou Hall, which was just certified as the greenest business school building in the country. The team worked closely with UC Berkeley campus groups to collect data on energy and water use, waste diversion, and supplies usage. UC Berkeley’s Energy Office, for one, has developed an energy dashboard to help monitor energy use anomalies across campus.

Upcoming Opportunities

Apply for the 2019 Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program

Each March, 20 early-undergraduate Doris Duke Conservation Scholars are selected from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program at UC Santa Cruz centered on the summers between academic years. The program's goal is to serve students from groups traditionally underrepresented in conservation, across disciplines, who can contribute to diversifying, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife and water. Throughout the two years and beyond, home mentors at each Scholar’s campus provide ongoing support. Scholars receive a $4,000 stipend each summer and become part of the national Doris Duke Conservation Scholars network for life. Applications for the 2019 class of Scholars are due February 8th.

Now Hiring at UCSF - Manager, Transportation Demand Management Programs and Services

In an effort to further reduce UCSF’s Single Occupancy Vehicle (SOV) rate – or at least keep it flat during UCSF’s planned growth and expansion – UCSF’s Department of Transportation is establishing a Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Center of Excellence (COE). A newly established Manager of TDM Programs and Services will head the COE. The Manager will have responsibility for identifying and deploying effective commute programs that motivate the University community to choose non-SOV commute modes, such as public transit, ridesharing, teleworking, etc.

Now Hiring at UCSF - Transit & Fleet Manager

The Transit & Fleet Manager oversees UCSF’s system of transit buses and shuttles, including driver hiring, training and performance management; route planning and driver scheduling; fleet technology; and fleet maintenance, acquisition and surplusing. The Transit & Fleet Manager will be instrumental in the University’s efforts to acquire additional electric buses (applying for grant support, whenever possible) and for maintaining the electric vehicle fleet. Concurrently, the individual must also maintain the University’s “old” shuttle fleet (mainly gasoline powered), making recommendations to leadership for surplusing vehicles when warranted.
