National Social Worker Month - Punky's Reflections - 2018 Annual Report
A New Home for Hale Kipa - Annual Paddling Event - 50 Years of Memories

March is National Social Worker Month: Let's Celebrate!

Each March, social workers are celebrated across the U.S. during National Professional Social Work Month. According to the National Association of Social Workers, the month is an opportunity for social workers across the country to highlight the important contributions they make to our communities. In total, the U.S. has nearly 700,000 social workers confronting some of our most challenging issues. We are proud to have a dedicated staff of social workers who are improving the lives of Hawaii’s at-risk youth every day. Mahalo for everything you do.

Punky's Reflections: Celebrating ALL Social Workers

Social Worker month, as it is commonly celebrated, is really a celebration of the capital SW, that is people who have degrees in Social Work both at a Bachelor’s and Master’s level. But we, at Hale Kipa, would also like to acknowledge all of our social workers. And while Hale Kipa certainly has MSW’s, and at times BSW’s, the reality is that the organization does social work although not always by Social Workers. More

Breaking Ground: Our 2018 Annual Report is Now Available

Our 2018 Annual Report is now available (click here for a PDF). Themed "Breaking Ground," we discuss our new campus in West Oahu and what it means for the future of Hale Kipa. We also feature the stories of two youth who have participated in programs such as WRAPAROUND and YO!

Hale Kipa Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Campus

Hale Kipa held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new multi-purpose campus in West Oahu on Dec. 4, 2018. The event featured speeches by Hale Kipa leadership, a formal blessing, VIP recognition and light refreshments. Participants included supporters, stakeholders, community members and other invited guests.

Located on 4.26 acres along Old Fort Weaver Road in Ewa, Hale Kipa’s Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus will serve as the agency’s headquarters and consolidate Hale Kipa’s programs and operations to improve service quality, reduce costs and build a sense of place in West Oahu. It will be completed later this year. / More

Hale Kipa's Annual Paddling Event

Hale Kipa held its annual paddling event on Dec. 28, 2018, at the Kamehameha Canoe Club on the Island of Hawaii. Longtime Canoe Club mentor Wainani Lee led the event and taught a half dozen youth participants about paddling and the importance of the canoe to Native Hawaiians.  Mahalo to the Kamehameha Canoe Club for donating paddles, canoes and halau space for this event.

50 Years of Memories at Hale Kipa

We are fast approaching our 50th anniversary, and our very own Sam Smith has been compiling a timeline of our journey.  His walk down memory lane has uncovered some great stories, so we are sharing them on Facebook as part of our Throwback Thursday series.  Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@HaleKipaInc) to learn about our last 50 years.

Above: IT'S THROWBACK THURSDAY! In the early 1980s, Steve Jobs donated new computers to Hale Kipa, enough so they could have one at every facility. He flew the staff out to California and trained them to use the machines, as well. According to the executive director at the time, Sam Cox, “this helped initiate the organization called Hawaii Youth Services Network”
