February 2019 - Newsletter

SERC Community Message:

They say good things come in threes, which is good because there are three of us - Jillian, Amy, Yesenia - now manning (womanning?) the newsletter! We hope y’all are settling into the new semester and are staying warm in this windy weather. If you haven’t already, please come check out the new SERC space in bNorth, in the basement of MLK (it’s suuuper spacious and right next to the food pantry).  Be sure to stay tuned for our new projects this semester!

We wish you the best of luck as midterm season begins!

~~~~~~~~~~~JOIN CARBON CREW~~~~~~~~~~~
Since its creation in Fall 2018, Carbon Crew is pioneering carbon neutrality efforts here on the UC Berkeley campus. From pushing for more plant-forward recipes in our dining halls, to finding unique ways to engage our campus with the goals and strategies of the Carbon Neutrality Initiative, to developing environmental curriculum for local K-12 schools, Carbon Crew hopes to continue to raise the bar of what carbon neutrality efforts can manifest as here on our campus. In the coming semester, we hope to continue our efforts through our Food Team, Campus Engagement Team, CO2RE (CO2 Reduction and Education Team), and PR Team. If interested, email dantegonzales98@berkeley.edu and check out our crew here: https://serc.berkeley.edu/carbon-neutrality-2025/
Other Upcoming SERC & Community Events
Come join Bronte Velez from Planting Justice; who will connect current struggles in the community with the civil rights work of the Black Panther Party and the United Farm Workers.
Planting Justice is a grassroots organization with a mission to empower people impacted by mass incarceration and other social inequities with the skills and resources to cultivate food sovereignty, economic justice, and community healing.
Location is the Person of Color Theme House. The POCTH was established for the purpose of creating a safer, more inclusive space for historically and presently marginalized low-income students of color and those from multicultural backgrounds with the Berkeley Student Cooperative.
Non-POC Residents should fill out the Community Agreements form (link below) prior to the event and MUST email the POCTH garden manager at gmpoc@bsc.coop.
Valentine’s Day may have passed, but to #MakeSercWerc, we need a whole lot of love! Big Give is coming soon!
What is Big Give? Big Give is an annual giving campaign that gives you and the entire Cal community a chance to come together to support organizations like SERC and amplify your generosity through awareness. Without the help of our generous donors, SERC’s work and mission would not be possible. In the coming few weeks, leading up to Big Give, we’ll be highlighting and showcasing the people and programs that #MakeSercWerc.
