From the Principal

Charlie EisenreichEach year the Minnesota Department of Education evaluates schools across the state using several student criteria. Under Minnesota’s consolidated Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan, Tech High School is rated using reading and math MCA proficiency scores, 4 and 7-year graduation rates, and consistent student attendance. These accountability measures are further broken down into student groups including race, English language learners, special education, and students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Overall in 2017-18, Tech students did quite well in meeting nearly all of the ESSA accountability standards. The one measurement where our students fell short of the standard was the 4-year Graduation rate for special education students. As a result and along with many schools across the district and state, Tech was designated as a school needing comprehensive support.

Since the beginning of this school year, Tech’s exceptional special education teachers have been meeting in Data Teams developing specific instructional interventions so that more of our students on Individual Education Plans are making progress toward graduation. Our guidance counselors are working with teachers to ensure there are specific plans put in motion for those SpEd students needing credit recovery. And we are piloting a 9th grade program this year where a group of teachers and staff meet weekly to build on student strengths while reducing the risk factors that impede student learning. We are confident these strategies will improve our 4-year special education graduation rates in the future. In addition, it should be noted that Tech’s “All Student” graduation rate is well above the state average. And when we compare our special education 5-, 6-, and 7-year graduation rates, we again exceed our state counterparts.

New Tech Update

The interior of the New Tech is looking more and more like a learning environment rather than simply large open spaces. Several areas are really starting to take shape: offices in the administration area, locker rooms, science labs, Special Education rooms, pool, restroom facilities, receiving, food preparation, auditorium, and the Tiger Den. As of this writing, carpet has been placed in two of the three learning neighborhoods and the majority of the interior lighting and wiring has been installed. Soon, the interior walls of individual learning studios (classrooms) and staff collaboration rooms will be set into place and we’ll begin to see where direct instruction will occur.

Last week, tours were provided for the Superintendent’s Cabinet members and for several members of the Board of Education. Members on the tour were impressed with the overall brightness, access to natural light, and the general openness feel to the building. Everyone agreed our future Tech students are extremely fortunate to have a facility like this to call their home. It’s an impressive structure inside and out!

Advanced Geometry Classes Learn From Professionals

Geometry Class
Whitney Lougheed, architect from IIW Minnesota and Kyle Walter, construction manager from ICS Consulting recently visited with geometry students. Students had been learning about similarity, proportions, scale models, and scale drawings.

Whitney and Kyle had a wonderful presentation of where they use these concepts in their careers. Whitney showed and explained how proportion is needed when designing buildings. Kyle brought the blue prints they use on the construction site for the new Tech High School.

They explained how they work together to design the actual building. Students were able to see a scale model of one of the learning neighborhoods as well as scale drawings/models on Whitney's computer program.

Students were thankful Kyle and Whitney took time to come talk to them about the new school. There were many great learning moments and questions during the short time they were in our classroom.
