THE HIGHLIGHTS

A civil rights organization has some bad news.

THE BACKGROUND.

Months ago, an FBI report came out letting everyone know that hate crimes in America have spiked around 17% from 2016 to 2017. The top targets: Jews (making up 58% of all hate crimes), Muslims (20%), and members of the LGBTQ+ community (22%). The FBI said the country’s only getting more and more dangerous for minorities. And that people need to see this as a “call to action.” Scene, set.

THE HAPPENINGS.

Yesterday, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) - a civil rights organization that keeps track of things like hate groups - announced that hate groups are up 30% in the past four years. We’ll repeat: 30%....in the past four years. As of now, they’re reportedly over a thousand hate groups in the US - the most there’ve been in at least 20 years. The new report says that the majority of these hate groups are white supremacist - including neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, white nationalists, and neo-Confederates. You read that right.

THE REACTION.

Mixed. Some people blamed Prez Trump, right-wing media outlets, and social media for continuing to spread and fuel hate. SPLC says this big rise in hate groups is all due to the fact that America’s becoming more diverse - something that’s scaring white supremacists. Critics pointed out that SPLC’s been known to take an extreme stance against hate - and has gotten in trouble for how it’s categorized hate groups and extremists.

SO…?

Between the FBI report and this new SPLC report, everyone can agree hate is on the rise in America. TBD, TBD, TBD.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: Recently, it was revealed that the Justice Dept is prepping to announce the completion of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation as early as next week. You read that right. Quick refresher: for years, the Russia investigation has been all anyone can talk about. Part of the country thinks Prez Trump and his team colluded with Russia...and part of the country strongly disagrees. Now, it looks like Americans will finally get the answers they’ve been looking for. Breath, bated. In other news, Oakland teachers are feeling trendy. Today, they’re expected to go on strike for a 12% increase in pay over the next few years. Stay tuned.

USA: Everyone is talking about Jussie Smollett. He’s the ‘Empire’ actor - who’s both African American and gay - who alleged he was attacked by two men yelling “racial and homophobic slurs” at him a few weeks ago. Police opened up an investigation...and started pointing fingers at Smollett for apparently staging the attack. Now, Smollett’s officially a suspect and faces a felony charge for allegedly filing a false police report. Meanwhile, it was just discovered that a Coast Guard officer arrested last week was planning on conducting a mass killing. The self-described white supremacist reportedly had 15 guns - along with a hit list including Democratic politicians and journalists from CNN and MSNBC. Not a typo.

WORLD: Yesterday, it was revealed that the White House was planning on creating a committee to look into whether climate change is a national security threat. It’d potentially be led by a guy who said “demonization” of carbon dioxide is like the treatment of Jews under Adolf Hitler. Raising concerns about whether the committee would be biased. This comes after US intel chiefs listed climate change as a threat to the US. Speaking of which, at least 78 people were killed after a historic district of Bangladesh was hit with a massive fire. Not yet clear what started the fire.

WHAT TO KNOW

$1,980:” how much Samsung’s new foldable smartphone costs. Apparently it’s the future of phones. The future’s feeling pricey.

SAY WHAT?

“Wait what…I thought this was a joke” - Ariana Grande, finding out she’s the first artist to occupy the top 3 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 since The Beatles. Imagine that.
