February 25 City Council Meeting Preview

Here are a few items on the upcoming City Council meeting agenda:
  • A grant amendment for final construction payment on the Peter Courtney Bridge and authorization use of 2008 Streets and Bridges bond funds for construction improvements to Division Street adjacent to the new police station. Learn more→
  • A public hearing on a Planning Commission decision to approve tree removal for a proposed 111-unit apartment complex on Wiltsey Road SE. Learn more→
  • A public hearing to discuss proposed changes to the way that Systems Development Charges (SDCs) are assessed. SDCs are collected from developers when a building permit is issued and is based on the relative impact each project has on public infrastructure. SDCs are used to help fund parks, transportation, water, wastewater, and stormwater systems that are needed to serve new developments.  Learn more →
  • A first reading on annexation of territory located at 4945 Delton Lane NE. Learn more→
Can’t make it in person? Watch it live online. City Council meetings typically convene on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month. Meetings start at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers, Room 240 in the Salem Civic Center.

Public Workshop on Multifamily Housing Design February 27

Date: Wednesday, February 27, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Location: Salem Public Library, Anderson Room, 585 Liberty Street SE
The community is invited to a public workshop on the design of multifamily housing. There will be an opportunity to provide input on ways to improve the City's housing design standards. 

The workshop is part of the Multifamily Housing Design project, which seeks to update the City’s regulations on housing developments with three or more dwelling units. The project aims to help meet Salem’s housing needs by removing barriers to multifamily housing development and ensuring new development is compatible with neighborhoods. Learn more→

Results from Library Upgrade Design Open House

The first community Open House on the Salem Public Library renovation project took place February 19, 6-8 p.m. Fifty attendees heard a presentation on options for improving or adding to the Library's spaces and features, and shared their views on Library improvements. Participants were asked about what works well in today's Library, as well as their hopes for the library of the future. Read more→

STRIDE Run/Walk Series

Starting in the spring, you can sign up for a monthly run/walk event. Events begin at 9 a.m. on scheduled Saturdays.

  • 5k series is $5 per event.
  • 10k series is $10 per event.
  • Half Marathon is $13.

Register online or visit the Parks and Recreation Services office in person. Registration will also be accepted on the day of the race from 8:15-8:45 a.m. Bibs are available on race day. Strollers and dogs (on a leash) are welcome. Learn more→

Teens Invite Public to Share Their Soles for 6th Annual Shoe Battle

The 2019 Shoe Battle of the Schools event launched Thursday, February 14 and runs through Thursday, February 28. "Show some love. Share your soles." is the event theme for a second year in a row launching on Valentine's Day this year and welcoming nine participating high schools in the friendly competition. 

High School classes and clubs form teams to collect new and gently-used shoes for local unsheltered youth, students' in-need, and young athletes. Participating schools seek to collect the greatest number of shoes with the winning campus receiving the traveling Shoe Battle trophy from the City of Salem and other prizes. Learn more→

Four Children Reading on Grass

Join the March into Non-fiction Reading Challenge!

Readers and listeners (ages 0 - 18) are invited to take the non-fiction reading challenge. Read books from a variety of non-fiction categories in March. In April, turn in your completed reading log in exchange for a new non-fiction book to keep. Register online or at the Youth Services or Teen Services Ask Here Desks.

February Edgewater Walking Cruise

This month, we’ll share some Edgewater love. Youth are painting rocks with inspirational messages that we will place at surrounding homes and businesses. Meet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 24 at West Salem Boys & Girls Club, 925 Gerth Ave NW. Afterward we’ll meet back at the club to enjoy free cocoa & cookies and conversation. All are welcome.

We're working on a multi-year project to update the Salem Area Comprehensive Plan, which guides development in the Salem area. The first phase, called Our Salem: Today, is analyzing the existing conditions of the City and evaluating how Salem could grow under current policies. Check the project website every two weeks for our latest polling question. See the results from our previous question.
