Holding Power Accountable with Helene Cooper
Join us for a small group discussion with one of the UNC School of Media and Journalism's most accomplished and well-traveled alumni. Helene Cooper '87 is the Pentagon correspondent for The New York Times. A native of Liberia, Cooper has reported from 64 countries for the Times and The Wall Street Journal. A Pulitzer Prize winner, Cooper has excelled at the highest levels of journalism as a reporter, editor, television commentator and best-selling author. (She was also once a Jeopardy clue!)

Cooper will meet with a small group of students on Monday, Feb. 25, in the Freedom Forum Conference as part of the “Holding Power Accountable” lecture series. “Holding Power Accountable” features journalists who are leading the examination of the people and organizations that hold power in society.

Bill Morton ’62 is the former CEO and chairman of Jack Morton Worldwide, an experiential marketing agency with over 600 employees in worldwide offices spanning four continents. His career with the agency began in 1963, when he joined the company founded in 1939 by his father, Jack Morton. After rising from an account manager to president and later CEO, Bill oversaw the company’s transformation from a meetings and events firm to a global experiential marketing agency best known for event marketing, promotional marketing, digital, social and mobile, content marketing, sponsorship marketing and employee engagement.

Bill currently splits his time between New York, where Jack Morton is headquartered, and Hobe Sound, FL, and serves on a variety of civic organizations. His interests are around current trends in digital media and entrepreneurial developments related to storytelling. Bill is looking to engage with students and faculty who touch these areas during his visit to the school this month.

Free professional headshots for new MEJO majors
The UNC School of Media and Journalism will be providing free professional headshots on the front steps of Carroll Hall on Friday, March 22, from 2-4 p.m. Undergraduate MEJO majors who have been accepted for Fall 2019 enrollment can sign up. The link for the Doodle poll to reserve a headshot appointment will appear on screen after submitting the New Student Orientation RSVP form.

Please dress accordingly. After the shoot, check back to this page for a link to the photo gallery. Students can only sign up for ONE 10-minute appointment in the 2-4 p.m. session. Spots are limited. Please line up in the main lobby of Carroll Hall at least five minutes before your appointment begins. 

NOTE: Students attending New Student Orientation #2 should NOT sign up for an appointment before 2:20 p.m. to make time for the orientation check-out process.

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is looking for a web developer to build out their new website. The build out will be done on WordPress and hosted on Pantheon. Website Development Opportunity
Dr. Jim Helton needs help with website design and development for his website (in WordPress) that will help Catholic priests continue their self-improvement throughout their careers. Dr. Helton seeks someone who can help on the front-end and make the site pretty or more in line with web standards, branding, readability, etc.

Most importantly, Dr. Helton is looking for help in the next 5-6 days. He estimates it will take a skilled designer 3-10 hours to improve layout, change fonts, cut the verbiage, or whatever is needed. There is, obviously, the strong possibility of on-going design work after next weeks first hurdle. Payment is negotiable and open (within reason) and immediate and will be between $300 and up, depending on hourly rate and time required. Organizing Corps 2020 - The Democratic National Committee 
The DNC is recruiting college juniors and students expecting to complete school by June 2020 to spend 8 weeks this summer – June 10, 2019–August 2, 2019 – learning the art and science of being a field organizer in a presidential election.

Corps members can earn $4,000 gaining valuable career skills in leadership, project management and communication while experiencing the exciting and rewarding field of campaigns.

The summer 2019 corps experience will give young people the skills and tools to organize their community and – importantly – get a great first job working for the Democratic presidential nominee and fighting to win across the country in 2020. Click here for more information.

Discounted Membership - The Association for Women in Sports Media
The Association for Women in Sports Media will kick off a membership drive for new and renewing professional members on Feb. 1. All prospective and renewing professional members who join between Feb. 1 and Feb. 28 will be able to take advantage of our discounted one-year membership of only $28. This is the lowest rate we will offer this year to join AWSM or to renew your professional membership.

As a professional member of AWSM, you will receive: 

  • the member rate to the 2019 convention June 13-16 at the Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina in Tampa, Fla. We also offer limited convention grants for members who are potential attendees. 
  • access to the AWSM jobs board, a password-protected portal that offers job leads across the country in sports journalism, media relations and sports administration.

Interns - National Association of Black Journalists & The Ringer / New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA
NABJ and the Ringer are offering two (2) full-time summer internships in Los Angeles and New York. Interns will work in either the audio, editorial, social media or video departments. This is a paid internship and has a full-time requirement of 40 hours per week. While the time frame of the internship is negotiable, applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 12 weeks. Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. college or university or be no more than one term past their graduation date; in good academic standing if still in school; and in possession of unrestricted work authorization.

Graphic Design and Marketing Intern - UNC School of Government's Environmental Finance Center / Chapel Hill, NC
The Environmental Finance Center (EFC) at UNC’s School of Government is dedicated to enhancing the ability of governments and other organizations to provide environmental programs and services in fair, effective, and financially sustainable ways. 

In support of our mission, the EFC seeks to hire a student graphic design and marketing intern to assist with communications for a diverse portfolio of environmental finance projects. The EFC’s projects are often complex and involve multiple environmental issues and partners. Much of our work is data-driven, and we strive to translate our applied research in clear, concise, and engaging formats.

Sports Trending Reporter - USA Today / McLean, VA
USA TODAY Sports seeks a digital reporter to work in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment. The position will be part of USA TODAY Sports’ NOW desk, working primarily on reporting trending and breaking news and the digital production and publication of such content. The candidate must demonstrate strong news judgment and have prior digital publishing experience with a keen eye for optimizing digital content focused on mobile audiences. He or she will specialize in identifying content -- including stories, videos and graphics -- that will resonate with a wide audience. He or she will also work on mobile and desktop programming as well as social media platforms. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of audience metrics and engagement tactics. This role will include early morning, night and weekend work.
