Study shows promising results for flu vaccine, Madison’s FluGen says

February 13, 2019
An experimental flu vaccine developed by a Madison company reduced flu virus levels and symptoms in people exposed to a mismatched strain, according to study results released Tuesday. The study by FluGen Inc., founded by UW-Madison scientists Yoshi Kawaoka and Gabriele Neumann, simulated the mismatch that frequently occurs when flu strains circulating in winter don’t match those in the annual vaccine.

UW Health: Mackie brings expansive entrepreneurial talent to lead new innovation initiative

UW Health has selected Thomas “Rock” Mackie to be the inaugural leader of the health system’s innovation initiative, which it is pursuing in partnership with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Mackie, who was also named chief innovation officer at UW Health, is a well-known member of Madison’s biotechnology sector as a researcher, entrepreneur and investor whose list of innovations and companies includes founding Geometrics and TomoTherapy

Invenra and WARF Initiate a Collaboration to Discover and Develop Novel Therapeutics to Fight Neuroblastoma in Children

January 31, 2018
Invenra and WARF (Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation) today announced they have entered into a collaboration to discover and develop a bispecific antibody therapeutic for the treatment of neuroblastoma, a cancer that is the third most common childhood cancer, after leukemia and brain tumors. The collaboration will use Invenra’s proprietary SNIPERTM technology to allow for precise targeting of the cancer cells while sparing normal nerve cells, and potentially alleviating unwanted toxicities and pain related side effects.

Exact Sciences takes aim at 15 types of cancer, envisions universal test

January 27, 2018
Exact Sciences Corp. says it is working on separate diagnostic tests to detect 15 of the deadliest types of cancer, and its ultimate, eventual goal is to create, with its partners at Mayo Clinic, a single, universal blood test for cancer.
