Larry Nimmer, Emmy nominated film maker visited and interviewed many of the Santa Barbara Studio Artists in 2018....including yours truly.  I viewed an unfinished draft of his presentation and it is sensational.  I feel privileged to be included in this film.  While interviewing each of the seven artist he questioned which esteemed artist from the past had influenced our art. He included an interesting segment on the history of that artist with each interview.  Therefore, the film is interesting on many different levels.  The film is titled D'ART.  When finished it will be submitted to Netflix.  More information in future newsletters as to when it will be available for viewing.

I'm not painting enough!
Why can't I seem to find more time to paint.....the week just disappears.
I LOVE to paint. Why don't I do it more?

I had this discussion with 3 artist friends recently. We all agree that we wished we were painting more....giving more time to our art and not having a real good reason why we weren't.  So we shook hands on a painting challenge to create 3 finished paintings in 3 months.  We decided to go back and find those photos or sketches that we have always known could be turned into fabulous rich paintings.  We all have multiple rich images/photos and they're just sitting in the "cloud," a drawer or a sketchbook waiting to blossom.

So..........I, Cathy Quiel, challenge you, my artist friends and students, to join me in the challenge of paintng 3 paintings in 3 months.  Go find those images NOW and the creative flow will begin.                                                                                                                                                                                                               If you accept my challenge email me at cq@cathyquiel.com and say hi and "I accept the challenge."   An added bonus will be that I get to hear from you all and hopefully see your latest work. It also will create accountability or guilt if you don't do the work...smile.
I will be posting progression of my challenge pieces on my Facebook page -
cathyquielwatercolorI'd love to see the paintings that you are creating.  Email me a photo of your paintings and with your permission I will post it on my Facebook page for all of us in the CHALLENGE project to view and enjoy.

Here are a couple photos that I want to turn into paintings. I selected them for a variety of reasons.  The majority attracted me due to high dramatic value contrast and color.  Others because of the mood and color scheme.  Some just simply give me joy such as the cow rear ends which I used in the top painting. One has a intriguing eye level while another actually suggests a whole new series for me. One photo represents a perfect day - a painting day in Tuscany with friends/students when a whole field of poppies decided to bloom for us in an astounding array of color. Life is and can be good!!!

Suggestions to get you painting more...........
1.  Create a time slot in which you paint each week, be it one hour or 8 hours.  During that time you do not answer the phone, throw in a load of laundry, answer the door or make any appointments.   Be highly strict in adhering to your painting time slot. It CAN be done!!!!!
2.  Read THE ARTIST WAY with 5 artist friends and discuss why you don't paint more.
3.  Always have a blank piece of paper and a writing utensil with you so that when you are waiting in the doctor's office etc. you can sketch fellow patients, magazine photos, your hand.  Getting the creative juices flowing releases the urge to do more of that......if you allow yourself to.  I can't tell you how many Quiel checkbook deposit slips, Wendy's receipts and old handouts have drawings on them due to this practice. Some turned into paintings.
4. Watch a YouTube segment on painting, try something new or something old in a new way.
5. Take a class, workshop or create your own painting group or critique group.

I'm excited to see what you are painting!!!
Fondly,
Cathy
