Conference USA's innovative MBB "bonus play" segment is upon us for the rest of the hoops season. Tier I: Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, Southern Miss, UTSA & UAB. Tier II: North Texas, Marshall, Florida Atlantic, FIU & Louisiana Tech. Tier III: Rice, Middle Tennessee, UTEP & Charlotte. League action resumes next weekend with full tip times set to be released later today. Certainly a wrinkle many other leagues will be watching to see how it plays out. (link); Per D1.ticker's comprehensive rankings comparison sheet (not yet updated from yesterday's games, but will be this afternoon), the Monarchs are the highest-rated NET squad in the conference at 86. West Virginia Deputy AD Zinn was recently named to Sports Business Journal's "Forty Under 40" & says Mountaineers AD Lyons frames Zinn's job this way, "Keli, you right the ship. We’re a big, massive vessel trying to get to port. There’s waves crashing, wind is blowing, and you make sure we get there." Zinn: "I love that analogy. I always start the day, whether it’s capital projects meetings, personnel matters, hiring someone or a contract negotiation, you always have a number of things that can happen. You are dealing with 450 kids, 18-to 22-year-olds. You got 200-plus staff, people are going to make mistakes and things are going to happen and you have to be able to react to that. I find my time sometimes is derailed a bit but that’s exciting and keeps me busy and the days pass quickly. I try to keep the ship going. I tell them, some days we dock at the wrong port but I’ll get it out and figure out how to get it going and make your way back to where it should be." More on Zinn's path through the industry, points to mentors like NCAA EVP & former Florida State AD Wilcox, as well as outgoing N.C. State boss Yow. (link)
Back in June of last year, Iowa State's Flight Service division was transferred to oversight by the athletic department, which includes a King Air plane & two staff pilots. The unit is now overseen by Senior Assoc. AD for Operations Jorgensen & while any department on campus has access to the plane/pilots, athletics is the primary user (70% of overall usage). The transfer of the division to athletics came after a review of former Prez Leath's personal use of aircrafts during his tenure in Ames. Most frequent flyers since January of 2017: ISU AD Pollard, FB HC Campbell, Wrestling HC Dresser & MBB HC Prohm. In FY18, the King Air flew 290 hours & 76K+ nautical miles. (link)
The NBA & FIBA announce plans for a 12-team pro league in Africa to launch in January of next year. From Yahoo's Weinrib: "There are already several professional teams across Africa, but this league will attempt to unify them into one place while providing financial support, resources and training. There will be qualifying tournaments held to determine which teams make the league with the nations of Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia likely to be represented." Hoops continues to grow globally. (link)

UC Davis AD Blue updates on facility projects for his portfolio, notes ongoing work with UCDavis Health on new signage for the naming rights to Aggie Stadium as the $40M practice digs & multipurpose student-athlete space is still a ways off. Softball's $2M enhancement package is done & in action as Blue notes, "We continue to evaluate some things related to the playing surface and to determine if we need to make any further enhancements and/or minor augmentation of the work that’s been done to the playing-field surface." Overall thoughts from FB HC Hawkins, "Look at all those things already here. The world-class education and academic standards, playing championship sports, the school’s location. Well, we don’t have to beg anybody to come here." (link)
Sticking with facilities, in a Tucson.com piece detailing FB upgrades around the Pac-12, here's some useful context on the 45K square foot Davis Indoor Sports Center going up at Arizona, "If you think athletic spending and debt service in the Pac-12 is excessive, keep this in mind: According to the UA’s 2018 capital projects financial report, the school has $1.6 billion in such debt campus-wide. It retired $74 million of debt a year ago and incurred $191 million of new capital projects debt. In that perspective, the Davis Center is just another (but very large) building." (link)
Brown has topped $100M in its fundraising push to enhance facilities, create HC endowments & bolster recruiting budgets. $5M from alum McMullen helped to launch the Excellence in Athletics Fund, "which aims to recruit and support athletes during their time at the University," while another major gift created the Fund for Women's Athletics, to help "fulfill recruiting, travel and equipment needs for women’s sports teams." Bears AD Hayes says there's still work to be done, wants to continue getting mileage out of the BrownTogether campaign. (link)
Ohio State AD Smith on FB HC-turned-Asst. AD Meyer, "He’s relaxed, he’s more comfortable, he’s learning a lot. His eyes are wide open to this side of the house, administrative side. He’s really, really embraced all of our other sports. […] He’s bringing unbelievable value and helping develop leadership with our teams. As time goes on, he’ll spend more time with our coaches to help our coaches continue to grow and learn. I think over time, some of the ideas that he has that he wants to implement that he’ll end up designing and developing with the rest of our staff, I think will help us in that space." (link)
Montana's FY18 results looked like this: $21.8M in revenue over $22.5M in expenses, leading to a $600K deficit that was covered by its reserve fund. Revenues were at $27.2M in 2017, thanks to some padding from contributions for the expansion to the Champions Center. The reserve fund is down to just $21K, from a high of $730K in 2015 as Grizzlies Assoc. AD for Business Operations Martin comments, "We bled it dry. Our rainy day fund has been chewed down. Nobody’s going to feel sorry for us here because of that. That’s how everybody’s operating. It is what it is." More data & comments. (link)
Tech: The NBA held its Tech Summit on Friday as All-Star Weekend festivities jumped into full gear. Of note: Commish Silver on the legalization of sports gambling, "I don’t think it’s going as fast as many people predicted." ESPN boss Pitaro indicated 2M to 3M per day are watching SportsCenter on Snapchat. Clippers owner Ballmer demoed his new CourtVision product that includes overlays of augmented reality, which look pretty cool. Mavericks owner Cuban adamant we don't want to give fans the option of betting on games while at games, "worst thing we can do is have fans look down. We want them to look up. Energy is the differentiator." Lots more. (link); Wizards owner Leonsis calls legalized sports gambling the "most important new business" for the NBA. Kings boss Ranadive: "The arena is the game console and your phone is the controller for the game console. So we're only limited by our imagination." (link); AT&T CEO Stephenson says his company will not enter that waters of actually taking & paying out bets, though it will accept advertising dollars from operators & casinos. Recode's Kafka wonders if (New) Fox's Murdoch might be comfortable also being an operator given his exposure to the practice in Europe. (link)
Also Noticed: Incredible stat from the Pac-12 as the last time neither UCLA nor Arizona MBB finished in the top-four of league standings was the 1947-48 season. The Bruins currently sit at ninth with the Wildcats at 10th. (link); Pinnacle Bank Arena is looking for bids on a new basketball court "with a new design and maybe a new logo" for Nebraska's basketball teams. Fans will get to weigh in on the floor design next month. (link); Utah Assistant Equipment Manager of Olympic Sports Stewlow was one of three then-Arizona athletic department members to be disciplined for his involvement in an alleged group sexual assault that took place in 2013. Stewlow was suspended for a year for violating the code of conduct policies. The Utes say there was no mention of the alleged incident or suspension during the reference checking process and Stewlow passed the criminal background check before coming to Utah in 2016, but the school will look into the matter and take "immediate and appropriate action."
