BUDGET PROCESS MESSAGE from AISD:

Thank you for your interest in AISD’s Academic Investments and Austerity Planning. Your input will be vitally important as we synthesize multiple sources of feedback in the coming months. Austin ISD is the place where students thrive, read and excel. We are making investments to prepare our students for college, career and life. This is how:

  • Thrive: all schools will meet state and local accountability standards. We will do so in a way that gets more students in the best learning environments, which in our planning means 21st century learning facilities.
  • Read: all students will read on level by third grade.
  • Excel: AISD will invest in our teachers with competitive salaries and benefits; we will make the investments to retain and recruit teachers.

We are facing tough budget decisions. In light of these challenges, keeping a sharp focus on our highest priorities will be critical to our continued success. As you know the district is facing challenging fiscal circumstances. This past June 2018, the Board of Trustees approved a budget that uses $30 million of the district fund balance, or savings, and we anticipate a shortfall of roughly $65 million by the upcoming school year, 2019-20.

We have included resources in this budget toolkit to help explain our process and priorities, including an FAQFinance Video, and online form to submit questions or comments.. We will continue working with our community members, families and staff throughout the process, and we encourage you to stay involved.

Hey Hey Austin High!!  We have a Swedish exchange student looking for a host family from now until the 1st week of June.  Please contact Liz Jenkins if you can help us.  Emilia Spangberg is 17 a great student and speaks English very well!  She really wants to finish her visit to America at Austin High.

Austin High School has an exciting opportunity to further our computer science program next year. We are investing in our students by partnering with Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS to build and grow our CS program. There are more than 500,000 open computer science positions without qualified talent to fill them across all industries. We are trying to help ensure our students have access to the necessary education to ensure a successful future for them.

Action We’re Taking
Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS is a program that recruits, mentors, and places passionate technology professionals into high school classrooms as volunteer instructors. These volunteers bring subject matter expertise and will join Mr. Yin to teach computer science together. TEALS provides training for both parties, rigorous curricula, and opportunities for students to continue their education outside of the classroom.

We are committed to our continued partnership with TEALS.  We currently offer several CS courses, but the following courses have TEALS support: “Introduction to Computer Science” and “Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science.” The introductory class is based on the award-winning University of California Berkeley CS10 course and is adapted specifically for high schools. The other course will prepare students to take the college board’s AP computer science A exam in May.

As a TEALS partner school, Austin High School needs to assist with volunteer recruitment from the computer science and software engineering fields to team-teach these courses with our teachers. Austin High School would hold the courses first period, if possible, to permit the volunteers to attend their jobs.

Please help --if you or someone you know works in the computer science or software engineering field and would be interested in making a difference in our students’ future success, please contact Amy Taylor at 512-414-1250. You can read more about TEALS on their website at http://www.tealsk12.org. I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to hearing from many of you.

Seniors!

Attention Seniors: Would you like to give a speech at this year's Dedication Day in April? Do you have a message you would like to share with our student body? The Hall of Honor Steering Committee is looking for several seniors who would like to give a keynote speech during the Dedication Day Grand Assembly in the Gym (for the student body). Students may use notes during the speech or memorize it. Speeches should be approximately 2-4 minutes in length. Your goal is to inspire younger students to get the most out of their time at Austin High and to address your Senior class about the future as a Loyal Forever Maroon. Possible topics include "What does it mean to be Loyal Forever?", "What I wish I knew as a freshman...", "What does it mean to be a Maroon?", or "Everybody is somebody at Austin High!"
We will have speech tryouts the week before Spring Break.
Seniors should see Ms. Windham (in room 303), Ms. Joucken (in room 206), or Ms. Stewart in the library if you are interested!

Seniors! Apply for the Hall of Honor Maroon Society NOW!

The Maroon Society honors outstanding Maroons who have contributed to the Austin High community with their service, commitment, and example of what it means to be Loyal Forever.

Maroon Society honorees will be announced and honored at the Dedication Day Grand Assembly. Each Maroon Society honoree will receive a small scholarship for college.

Every summer UT Austin sponsors a Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program for high school graduates who will be attending a senior college beginning with the fall semester, and who have applied to UT Austin (preference given to students attending UT Austin, and whose intended majors are electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, and computer science).

This program, which began in 1982, involves summer employment at Applied Research Laboratories in northwest Austin and provides a "hands-on" introduction to research and development.  This is an amazing summer program for graduating seniors, and it gives them the opportunity to earn a competitive salary ($15.44 an hour) for the 12 week program.  This prestigious group of students also write reports that are published and widely distributed at the end of their summer term.  Please check the site for additional information regarding the program:

https://www.arlut.utexas.edu/apprentice.html

The application deadline for this program is March 15th, 2019.
