End Deadly Disability Discrimination

“When I was a baby I got meningitis. This is the reason I have an intellectual disability. My intellectual disability means I am up to three times more likely to die from preventable causes. It also means I could die 27 years earlier than most people.”
- Shu Hua Chan, Chairperson, Council for Intellectual Disability.

In NSW, with your help, CID has done strong advocacy on the need to reduce the high rate of preventable deaths of people with intellectual disability. As a result of advocacy by us and others, the NSW Government put $4.7million into specialist intellectual disability health services last year.

This is a good win but there is a lot more to do.  So we have joined with our national organisation 'Inclusion Australia' to launch the 'Our Health Counts' campaign across Australia.

Down Syndrome Australia, the Australian Association of Developmental Disability Medicine and the Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry (UNSW) have joined the campaign too. Continue reading...

Aged care among courses in NSW Labor's TAFE plan

More than 600,000 students will save thousands of dollars under a NSW Labor plan to address skill shortages with free TAFE courses. Plumbing, electrical trades, disability, aged care and childcare will be among the courses initially covered by the 10-year plan, which Labor says will be modified each year to plug gaps.

“This government is deliberately killing TAFE and we need to rescue it,” opposition leader Michael Daley said in Sydney. “Free TAFE will not only help teach young people the skills they need but also offer older people who’ve lost their jobs the opportunity to retrain – and retrain free of charge.”
