Sussex biological recording news

A new year of recording is upon us! Welcome to the first edition of the SxBRC newsletter for 2019, full of reflection on the recording year just passed and lots of new things to get involved in for the coming recording season. Don't forget to send us your records for 2018 if you haven't already!

Adastra 2018 is online!

The annual review of biological recording in Sussex is now available to read online. 

Many thanks to all the contributors for supplying articles, and Bob Eade for the cover photo. You can read through previous years of the publication here and proceedings of seminars from 1990 to 2001 are also now available on our website
Sussex Biological Recorders' Seminar news round-up!
 
Thanks to everyone that came along to the 30th Sussex Biological Recorders' Seminar on Saturday. Check out the post on SxBRC's news page for information on how the day went! 
 
News items from the day  

Martin Willing is interested in records for two new species to Sussex and the UK - the Chinese Mystery Snail and the Asian Date Mussel. Details are on page 15 of the Adastra 2018 publication if you'd like to contribute records or find out more.  


Mike Edwards has created a key to the Wasps of the family Vespidae. 
You can read about the life cycles of social wasps and Mike's intentions for a more reliable assessment of distribution of these species on page 56 of the Adastra 2018 publication, which contains details of the best way to submit records.   

Sussex Ornithological Society is planning an SOS field workers meeting on 28th September at Adastra Hall, Hassocks - more details will be available on their web page nearer the date. 
They are also looking for support with the National Willow Tit Survey and Sussex Turtle Dove Survey for 2019 - details on how to get involved are available on their website. 

Sussex Ancient Tree Forum - A new regional branch of the Ancient Tree Forum is launching in Sussex this year, to be kept updated on developments please sign up for the newsletter, selecting 'Sussex' from the list of regional groups. Field meetings are to follow, the first of which will be on 11th May at Sheffield Park. Keep an eye on the website for details.

Chichester Wildlife Corridors - Sarah Hughes and Jen Pollitt from Chichester District Council are requesting assistance in improving the number of biological records in the proposed wildlife corridors. Data can be submitted through the usual channels to SxBRC.

Join Sussex Fly Group on Facebook!

Sussex Fly Group have started a Facebook group for members to announce events and recording activities, and discuss fly identification in Sussex. If you've got an interest in flies then join them on Facebook or get in touch with Michael Blencowe for more information.

We're asking you to send us records of the humble toad this month. Have a read through our guide to identifying them and submit your records via iRecord to help us fill in the gaps where we don't have any data.

Over one million iRecord sightings this year! 

Exciting times at iRecord head office this January as 2018 became a landmark year for recorders entering data through the system.

Thanks to everyone in Sussex that has sent data to us via iRecord. In Sussex we are fortunate to have a comprehensive list of iRecord verifiers who help us get data into our database and available for use. If you aren't an iRecord user but would like to know more about it, you can take a look here for more information. The Sussex Local Wildlife Sites Initiative has launched its new website

UK Biological Recording News

New sites discovered for Rugged Oil Beetle in Gloucestershire through the Back from the Brink project. Read the blog by Butterfly Conservation on this exciting discovery!  

Help trap carrion-feeding flies with the Calliphoridae and Rhiniidae Recording Scheme and send them to be identified. Information on building a trap and the protocol for trapping is available on the Dipterist Forum website.  

The Tanyptera Project is recruiting a 'Tanyptera Assistant Entomologist' based in Liverpool - applications close 28th February

Upcoming Events 

Sussex Wildlife Trust's Woods Mill 50 Project Bioblitz is on the 29th & 30th March. They would appreciate any recorders coming along to help add to the species list and celebrate the end of the project! Please get in touch with James Duncan for more details.  

FSC Biolinks 2019 Programme is now online, which includes a Learn to Love Earthworms course at Woods Mill Nature Reserve on 13th March. Booking in advance required! 

Sussex Shoresearch dates announced - If your resolution for 2019 was to see more of the Sussex coast, be sure to join Sussex Wildlife Trust's Sarah Ward for Seasearch.
