Menorca is the most laid-back and traditional of the major Balearic Islands. Compared to its neighbours Majorca and Ibiza, it’s been relatively unchanged by tourism. This Mediterranean island offers an endless array of unforgettable landscapes, and is well known for its beautiful beaches, excellent gastronomy & fascinating history.
We have chosen the luxury 4* Superior Hotel 55 Santo Tomás as our base for the 5 day break. The hotel is based in the small attractive resort of Santo Tomas – on the Southern coast of the Island where you will have access to two glorious beaches, and miles of scenic walking and cycling routes. There’s a 3-kilometre stretch of spotless sand here – one of the longest stretches on Menorca. Its pale sands and crystal-clear waters will make you forget you're only in the Balearic Islands. Part of the famous walk along Menorca’s coastline – the Cami de Cavalls passes through Santo Tomas . Why not take the route along the coast side path to Son Bou, which takes around 45 minutes?
Within a 30 minute bus ride from the hotel is the capital City of Mahon - offering a magnificent harbour, with spectacular super yachts from all over the World, and a vast array of great restaurants. The architecture of the elegant, laid back City reflects the legacy of the British occupation, making Mahón a great place to enjoy the unhurried Menorcan way of life. A visit to the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria is a must - its famous organ has four keyboards and more than 3,000 pipes ! If you get to the Cathedral for 11 am, you’ll catch a fabulous recital. There’s also the Place de S’Esplanada for cafés and people watching, the 18th Century Xoriguer Gin Distillery to look round – plus harbour-side restaurants for a long, lazy lunch. Add to this boutique shops, sleek bars and possibly the best tapas on the island and you have a great day out!
A day trip to Ciutadella during your stay on the Island is highly recommended. Ciutadella used to be the capital and can be reached by bus in just 30 minutes. Packed with medieval architecture and Moorish-style buildings, Ciutadella’s cobbled lanes, Gothic churches and palaces make it haven for exploring. There’s the palm-shaded Placa des Borns, considered one of Spain’s most beautiful squares and home to the elegant Town Hall. Plus, there are the lavish 17th-century palaces tucked down the surrounding alleyways. Hunt for souvenirs, visit a museum or two, or head to one of the harbour front cafes to cool off with drinks while you watch the passing boats.
Whether you come to Menorca to simply relax at this stunning hotel … or discover the delights of Mahon & Ciutadella, you are sure to have a great time!
