Kia ora koutou
We had a great turnout at the community learning meetings last week.  It was great to see new and old faces.

The next meeting with your child’s teacher is the Learning Snapshot meeting on 6 and 7 March. This is an opportunity for families to have a conversation with the teacher about how your child has settled in.  It is also an opportunity for families to share any information with the teacher that you would like them to know. Meetings are 10 minutes long and can be booked using the following link. The school code is svstf.
There is no written report.

FroGSS Meeting
The first meeting of the year is this Monday 25 February @ 7pm in the Staffroom. All welcome

ROAD SAFETY
Golden Sands encourages our students to walk, bike, skate and scooter to school, and it's great to see so many coming to school this way each day.
Some of our senior students have been fortunate to participate in specific training to help them learn to ride their bikes safely on the road.
We would like to remind any families who pick and drop their children by car to be extra careful around the school, to watch out for bikes on the road, and help ensure all our students are safe at these especially busy times of the day.

Teacher Only Day
We also have a teacher only day on Monday March 11.  This day will be spent with all teachers updating and stretching our vision.  This is really important for us to work on as we have met the goals we have previously set and also we now have lots of new staff.  We have employed the original expert that we used in 2014 to work with us again.
Play Time are running a programme in the Multi Purpose Space for this day. See their advertisement further on in the newsletter

Hats and Helmets - Safety at School
Two things that we need to remind you!  Please ensure that your child has a school hat so that they can participate in outdoor activities.

We are also focussing on helmet wearing.  It would be fantastic to see adults that are riding to school with their children modelling good safety and wearing helmets too.  Children follow what we do and helmet wearing can save your life. Thanks for your support.

Welcome to the following new students this week - Aleyna in Batten and Kaius in Rutherford

Swimming sports - This Friday 22 March
To provide a better connection between swimming lessons and our swimming sports events, this year we are going to provide a fun event at the end of the children’s swimming lessons in term 2 and 3.  This will be a non-competitive event.

For our very able Year 3-6 swimmers there will be a competitive event held at Papamoa Community Pool on Friday 22 February.  For the Year 5 and 6 children this event will give children the opportunity to be selected for clusters.

Each week we'll introduce you to our staff members.  They'll share some of their life experiences and interests and what they like to get up to when they're not at school enriching the lives of our students.
Hi, I am Nicola Wilcox, Team Leader of Rutherford.
I moved back to New Zealand in September after living and working in Dubai for the last 6 years.  Prior to this I lived and worked around the Auckland area.  In Term 4 last year  I joined Golden Sands School, teaching in Batten for the Term.  I am now very excited to be Team Leader of our latest community 'Rutherford'.
I recently bought a house in Mount Maunganui so am happily exploring the beaches and cafes.  I love to travel, particularly experiencing new cultures and food!  I enjoy playing sports such as tennis, netball and squash and also walks up The Mount.

Tena koutou katoa,
Tihei Mauriora! My name is Charles. I live here in Papamoa with my wife Megan and  our daughter Daisy who seems to be growing at a really fast rate. My hobbies are creating music and I enjoy teaching students the love for music too.  I am in my 6th year of living in Papamoa and teaching at Golden Sands School. This year I have the privilege of teaching year ones in our most recent Rutherford Learning Community.

I am originally from Rotorua and moved here in 2013 with my wife, who is a teacher at Bethlehem School . We are very fortunate to live where we are and to be part of a beautiful community in Papamoa.  I am very excited for 2019, this year is definitely going to be another great year.

My name is Les Raos and this is my second year as Caretaker at GSS. Prior to this I was a Project Manager for Versatile Homes. I have been in the building business for most of my working life in many capacities. I was born and raised in Auckland and lived in San Francisco for 28 years. I returned to NZ with my American wife Elizabeth 14 years ago. My adult children Kari and Kevin live in Portland Oregon with their significant others. Kari has given me my only grandson Cooper who is 8 months old. I can’t wait to see him later this year. Elizabeth works for Oceania Gold in Waihi as a Contracts Administrator, we live in Katikati. For fun and leisure, I enjoy sailing, boating, fishing, biking and gardening. I was a Coast Guard volunteer when living in Auckland until 2 years ago. When I left NZ on my OE I sailed around the Pacific and ended up in California, fell in love and stayed for 28 years. I enjoy living back in the BOP where all my family and relatives also live. I enjoy working at GSS and am looking forward to a good year.
