Hello You

First off, I am grateful to everyone who wrote in after last week's newsletter. I am grateful to any reader who corresponds with me. My first article today was triggered by precisely that, Hilda writing to me about a recent newsletter.

And I am grateful too to those correspondents who email me at any time about anything, especially where it begins with "I thought you would like this." This week a genius contribution has flooded in with the answer to a question which has been on my mind for a while.

What I love especially about that is that I didn't have to go looking for it. It came to me. Woo woo!

Tosha Silver's Abundance Prayer

At the end of January, one of my newsletters was entitled A Weekful of Wonderful Women because that was the story of my week. It included mention of Mary Oliver on her passing, and it concluded with a link to a blog I’d written about my Three Favourite Astrologers.

A long-time reader, Hilda, wrote to ask me if I knew of the work of Tosha Silver. Oh boy! Do I? As far back as 2014, I was introduced to Tosha’s book Outrageous Openness by David Barker who said the same, he thought I’d like her, and I’ve blogged about her twice voting her one of my three favourite books of 2014 and again on Day 3 of 31 Days of Abundance.

Hilda wrote:

“Do you know Tosha Silver? I have a sneaking suspicion you’d like her. Outrageous Openness is like a modern day version of Florence Scovel Shinn’s Game of Life and How to Play it. And she has a new book coming out on Feb 5th called It’s Not Your Money. (Because everything belongs to God.) She’s an astrologer too but that’s not her main focus these days. She’s always sharing insights around what’s happening astrologically though. Attaching her Abundance Prayer to give you a little taster. “

In addition to Tosha’s Outrageous Openness in Kindle format, I have the audio version because I love to hear her read it in her own voice and I especially love the tales she tells of being an astrologer for a long time on a newspaper in San Francisco.

Hilda attached a copy of Tosha’s Abundance Prayer in an attractive format which I am sharing with you today, as I scoot off to get my hands on the new money book. If that’s read by her I might get that in the audio format too. Ah no, it isn’t yet. Shame.

How wonderful it is to have woo woo colleagues with whom to be on the same wavelength. Thanks, Hilda.

Who I Want to Win the Oscars 2019

There's been a lot of talk recently in one of my groups about the importance of hobbies. Something life-enhancing in which you can immerse yourself and express yourself and discover wonder. For me, that's cinema so today I am sharing my hobby with you in the run-up to this weekend's Oscars for which I shall be up all night.

This is my list of personal favourites. It wouldn’t be true to say that these are the most deserving winners in anyone’s eyes other than my own but regular readers of my blog or listeners to my podcast will know that I LOVE film with every fibre of my being and I do put myself through quite the movie workout in the run-up to the February awards ceremony every year.

Despite not having a TV or Sky, I find a way to stay up all night whenever possible and this year have added a free 14-day trial to my Now TV app which will cost me £9.99 after that if I want to stick with Sky Cinema which I think unlikely.

This is a completely personal list, biased, partisan and shamelessly so. It is a list of the films and performances I have loved best and sometimes it was very, very hard to choose, as you will see. It takes no account of who I think will win, or who I think should win, just those I’d love to win. And when my own faves win, it makes staying up all night totally worth it and the buzz lasts for several days.

My Best Picture of Those Shortlisted

Roma

But honourable mention goes to Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book and Vice.

My Best Director

Yorgos Lanthimos, because his leading ladies have raved about his creativity. I didn’t like his film, The Favourite, but I am trying not to let that influence me, and I am wanting to at least somewhat fairly share out the gongs here.

My Best Actress

Glenn Close for The Wife. It has taken me decades to forgive her for that terrifying performance in the bunny-boiler movie, Fatal Attraction, but this one was powerful enough to obliterate all memories of that. She is on simmer throughout the film, but once she gets to boiling point in the closing scenes… look out!

I should say I’d be chuffed if the lady from Roma won it, and any win for the luminous Olivia Coleman is always welcome, not least because her acceptance speeches are so chaotic and funny. She is a wonderful woman as well as a fab actress.

My Best Actor

Got to be Rami Malek for bringing Freddie Mercury back to life and with whom I have become totally besotted (Rami, not Freddie), but my underdog would be Viggo Mortensen who is often nominated but doesn’t win nearly often enough. I think he is totally underrated, so much so that I do not expect him to win this year either, sadly.

My Best Supporting Actress

Regina King in If Beale Street Could Talk

My Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali (I LOVE him) for Green Book (and I LOVED that film) although if I had been able to see Can You Ever Forgive me, I might be rooting for REG, Richard E. Grant who is totally adorable and excellent in the trailers but they are not enough to judge by. He seems thoroughly delighted just to have been recognised for his work AT LAST. Good on him.

Screenplays – I’m no expert but I’d be giving Original to Vice and Adapted to If Beale Street Could Talk.

My Best Cinematography

Roma

Music – I’d be giving Original Song to Gaga&Bradley for Shallow and Original Score to If Beale Street Could Talk.

My Best Film Not in the English Language

Roma

Categories on which I have no opinion

Makeup, costume, documentaries, short films, animated films, sound, production design, visual effects and editing. Talented all, no doubt, but I have no criteria by which to judge as I know nothing about any of them. The best I can say is that obviously I would miss them if they weren’t there, and notice them if they were done badly. It is wonderful though when the back of house peeps are awarded and we get a look at them and at their passion for their work.

  • Who are your faves?
  • Who do you want to win?
  • Who do you think will win?
  • Will you be up all night too?

Does Your Mission Feel Impossible?

Is it lonely at the top of your business empire? Do you want an opinion, accountability, support, a creative brainstorm, to join a group to help you grow your business or just a friendly ear to listen when you want to talk about your life?

I'm your woman.

Book yourself in for a sesh. The first one's always free. Here's a handy link to my online diary. If my available slots at 2 and 3 on weekday afternoons don't suit your own diary, contact me.

That's what most people do these days, not about finding a suitable diary slot, it's just their opening gambit - who are you, what do you do, and how can you help me?  I get them to book themselves in so I can meet them, we can have a chat and they can get a feel of what it would be like to work with me as their coach and confidante.

If even that feels like too big a step, just hit reply to this email and try to say a few words about your situ. I'm not going to sell you or get you to commit to anything, I promise. We can do this one step at a time to suit your emotional availability to the work, and your bank balance.

Remember me when it all feels impossible, confusing, conundrum-like or anything else where I can help you to trust yourself again. Often that's what it comes down to.

As one of my reader supporters said after last week's newsletter:

"I would attribute the self-belief that I have acquired at least in part to your constant encouragement over the past few years."

Until next time...

Judith
