By the deadline we received an overwhelming number of submissions for oral presentations, posters, short communications, structured sessions and workshops. All submissions are now with the Scientific Committee for review. Authors will be notified by 31 May of the outcome and will have two weeks from notice of acceptance to register for the conference, paying the early-bird fee (EUR 400).

Olivier George works at The Scripps Research Institute which focusses on understanding how drugs affect your brain and how your brain controls your actions. To quote Dr George: ‘The brain is truly one of the last unknown territories in science, studying it is a little bit like sailing a ship to an imaginary world. Finding what you were looking for is an amazing feeling, but the best day is the one where you find something you never expected.’

Johanna Gripenberg is Director and Researcher at STAD, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. This institute develops, implements and evaluates promising methods to reduce substance use problems in society.

Professor Richard Horton, is Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet, London. He is an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University College London, and the University of Oslo. He has strong interests in global and planetary health, together with the contribution that medicine makes to our wider culture.

|
Marilyn A. Huestis brings an extraordinary breadth and depth of knowledge in clinical and forensic toxicology, anti-doping, diagnostic screening and confirmation drug testing, and cannabinoid agonists and antagonists. Her research is focused on improving people’s lives by reducing deaths from drugged driving, finding novel medications to treat drug dependence and using drug testing as a tool for drug dependence treatment.

The FuturiZe project will provide bursaries to cover the conference fee, travel and accommodation for 120 professionals who would otherwise not be able to attend Lisbon Addictions so that they can take part in this unique experience. The WHO annual meeting on alcohol and health will take place on 22 October, as a side event of #LxAddictions19. There has been considerable progress in reducing alcohol-related deaths in several countries. However, the WHO European Region still faces one of the highest levels of alcohol-related deaths in world. The WHO Regional Office for Europe will organise a one-day meeting with Member State representatives to discuss effective and evidence-based ways to strengthen the 2013-2020 European Action Plan to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. This will be a closed meeting (by invitation only).

The 9th symposium of the Alcohol Policy Network Europe (APN) will take place on 21 October, as a side event of #LxAddictions19. The draft agenda includes topics such as: salient alcohol policy developments in selected countries; the role of the industry in alcohol policymaking; and regulating alcohol marketing in electronic media. Preparations are underway to also have a joint session with the WHO Regional Office for Europe. Read more >>

Health Without Barriers, the European Federation for prison health and human rights in prison, is organising its second European conference on health care in prison in Lisbon on 21 and 22 October, as a side event of #LxAddictions19. The conference will provide a space for discussion and exchange among health professionals working in prison in European and non-European countries. The participants will come from different disciplines, from practice to research and monitoring, from law enforcement and prison administration to peer involvement, including people with a personal experience of prison.
