ASIAN AMERICAN CROSSROADS
2018-2019
LECTURE SERIES
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. The order militarized the West coast and essentially stripped rights of nearly 110,000 mainland Japanese Americans. Over the course of the following weeks and months, entire communities were uprooted and transported to interment camps.
EO 9066 forever changed the landscape of the Japanese American community, but also set precedence for future use of marshall law and detainment. Dr. A. Naomi Paik's recent work, Rightlessness, makes these connections between Japanese internment and Guantánamo today.
