Celebrating Black History Month

There are injustices so shocking still in the world, but it only takes one person to stand up for what's right to change the course of history. Three extraordinary people who changed the history include Martin Luther King, William Wilberforce, and Viola Desmond

Martin Luther King: Lead the march for social justice and civil rights for all.
William Wilberforce: A British politician who worked tirelessly to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire.
Viola Desmond: Insisted on being treated equally by sitting in the whites only section of a movie theater in Nova Scotia and was subsequently arrested.

Join me at my Community Black History Month Celebration

Join me and special guest MPP Mitzie Hunter on February 23 at the Scarborough Centennial Rec Center for our community celebration for Black History Month!

Modern Slavery Article

The Modern Slavery Bill has caught the attention of Delta 8.7 Forum! The Forum is the world’s leading venue for discussion of the latest data and evidence about forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour, and what it means for policy to achieve Target 8.7. I was delighted to write an article about the process behind creating Canada's Modern Slavery Bill and the implications for Canadians.

Climate Action Incentive

Pollution has a cost – it impacts the air we breathe, our children’s health and our economy. That’s why the Government of Canada has put a price on carbon pollution.

Our put a price on pollution while giving money directly back to Ontarians. For example, an average family of four will receive $307 through the Climate Action Incentive when they file their taxes.

8 of 10 Ontario families will be better off. Also, Ontarians can save even more money if they choose clean solutions (public transit, a more efficient vehicle, LED light bulbs or smart thermostats). Since you are a resident of Ontario you can claim it when you file your income tax and benefit return.

Parliamentary Visit to London & Brussels

Visiting NATO Headquarters with my parliamentary colleagues James Maloney & Michael Levitt
From January 21-25, I lead a delegation of Canadian parliamentarians on a mission to London and Brussels. We met with our parliamentary counterparts, trade and migration experts, NATO officials, ambassadors and
Brexit negotiators, to discuss political dynamics in the UK and in the EU, to learn about the Brexit process and its potential impacts, and to strengthen and modernize bilateral ties between Canada and the UK.

Welcoming Joanna to our Office

Our Ottawa team is delighted to have Joanna interning in our office this semester as part of the program at Laurentian Leadership Centre of Trinity Western University.

Valentine's Day Citizenship Ceremony

Thank you to Judge Wong & his colleagues for not only personalizing this morning's Citizenship ceremony but warmly welcoming 81 brand New Canadians. From now on Valentine's Day will hold a special place in their lives.

Shine a Light on Modern Slavery Day

I was more than pleased to join in Shine a Light on Slavery day. To see a copy of my Modern Slavery Act, please click here

Charitable Giving Roundtable

A fascinating and disturbing conversation about the precipitous decline in philanthropic giving with a looming social deficit on the horizon

Meeting with the Estonian Ambassador

A useful discussion with Estonian Ambassador Toomas Lukk about cyber security, historical relationships, and understanding of Russian proximity & threats.

Scarborough
Arts Visit

I enjoyed my recent visit to Scarborough Arts and had the opportunity to personally congratulate them on receiving funding for  “The Cultural Cookbook Project”. To learn more about their work, please click here

416 Caucus Meeting with Mayor Tory

I took part in a productive meeting last month with Toronto Mayor John Tory and the 416 Caucus. Transit, housing, and crime are top priorities for constituents. A positive working relationship between the Mayor and Toronto Liberal MPs.

Meeting with the Canadian Federation of Medical Students

For the first time in Canadian history, there are more seniors than children under the age of 14. Massive implications for healthcare & pharmacare costs. Thank you to the Canadian Federation of Medical Students for an interesting discussion.

Flag Day

Did you know that February 15th was National Flag Day? 54 years ago, Prime Minister Pearson, MP John Matheson & Canadians across  worked together to create our flag. It is a symbol of our great country & national heritage.

The Opening of the Interim West Block Chamber

Last month was the first time MPs sat in the interim House of Commons chamber in West Block. Over the next decade, Centre Block will be resorted and modernized for future generations. It is a pleasure to continue serving in the new House.

Remembrance Chamber

As part of the transition out of Centre Block and into West Block, I attended the opening of the Remembrance Chamber.
