Cleanup continues as a result of the laboratory fire in Burt Hall that happened on November 30, 2108.
Leadership in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, OSU’s Risk Management, and University Facilities, Infrastructure and Operations are continuing to work on identifying temporary spaces to relocate labs so that faculty and students can resume their work. Decisions are being made regarding the instrumentation in the labs, with some units being refurbished while others are being replaced.
In the meantime, inventory lists of items in the building are being finalized. The first and second floors of the building sustained water damage and the second and third floors are affected by smoke damage. The areas with substantial smoke damage are being completely gutted. Work towards the reconstruction of Burt Hall has also begun, with some conceptual designs, and contractors will soon come on board to refine the design and carry out the reconstruction work.
There are still many uncertainties, such as the timelines and the way to return back to operations in Burt Hall, but many groups across campus are working together to facilitate progress. It’s a big problem, and folks are putting forward their best effort.
