THE WORD

THESE BRIEF BITS OF INBOX INSPIRATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY

rain, rain and more rain! two trees down, power outages, tornado sirens, tuna noodle casserole, play date with our niece & nephews, Kingdomino & Mario Party, Erin&Eric, Noodles (!!), finally seeing A Star Is Born, crying forever, Discovery of Witches, recharging our Kindles, and re-packing our carry-on only bags now that we're back off cars and back on planes!

WHAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT | PUNCTUATION
As we mentioned last week, we've been playing a lot of games of late -- because we've had access, and time, and friends and that. Being an all or nothing type, Faris noticed that he has failed to read a book during the couple of months of 2019... which is fine for a bit, but maybe shouldn't last. So he didn't bring his Switch with us, just a bunch of books.

One of the things we most appreciate about the peripatetic lifestyle is that it creates a large number of what we call punctuation points. Disjunctures where the environment changes, allows us to identify and change habits. It helps us embrace new habits, and generally start fresh. Every week or two. By the same token, of course, it can make having healthy habits much harder to keep ;)
Quote of the Week
"Corporate outrage is fundamentally manipulative and tends to further the interests of the already rich and powerful. Rarely is it a force for social good."
— Charles Duhigg

Making America Misogynistic Again

#Art #Politics #Advertising
An artist going by Saint Hoax has remade old magazine ads, which were already misogynistic in their illustrations, and taken to replacing the headlines with quotes from the President of the USA. What year is it again? ::BOING BOING::

Why We Can't Quit The Qwerty Keyboarde

#KeyboardLove #ClackityClack
From MIT, a history of the Qwerty keyboard, and why it's not likely to go away anytime soon. Ultimately, if we're going to be convinced to make the switch from something we already know how to use so well -- it's going to have to vastly improve our experience. And technology like tap (which allows you to tap on any surface) and voice, or even Gmail's SmartReply, just isn't there... yet.  ::MIT TECHNOLOGY REVIEW::

Why Are We So Angry?

#USA #Sociology #Psychology
Anger research shows that it can be very useful. It's a dense form of communication that can trigger necessary conflicts. But to be healthy, it needs to achieve closure and it is easily manipulated into moral indignation, tribalism and revenge. America has always been angry, but anger merchants in politics and media are now invested in endlessly maintaining the anger, making change difficult and people unhappy.  ::THE ATLANTIC::
